I don’t know what’s gotten into Edmundo Sosa, but I never want it to stop. For the SECOND time in a week, the super-utility man delivered a season-defining clutch hit, this time launching his first career grand slam with two outs in the top of the ninth to storm back and beat the Angels 5-3 on Friday night in Anaheim.

Down 3-1, two outs, and Edmundo Sosa turns the whole thing on its head. This team refuses to die, and Sosa has become the poster child for it.

Joyce walked Realmuto to keep the inning alive, the Angels went to lefty Sammy Peralta, and up stepped Sosa. On a 1-1 changeup, he drove it to left-center for the grand slam, pounding his chest a little as he rounded the bases. It isn’t every day you hit a go-ahead granny with your team down two in the ninth. That was the exact right amount of swagger for the moment.

The thing that keeps this frustrating: Once Painter escapes that first inning, he’s a completely different pitcher. He was great over the next five innings, allowing just a single walk. The growth since his return from Triple-A on July 31 has been obvious and encouraging.

The first inning remains a genuine problem, and it’s not a small one. He’s now allowed seven first-inning runs in two of his last three starts, and for the season he’s surrendered 20 runs in the first inning for a staggering 10.0 first-inning ERA.

That number has to come down before October, because you can’t keep spotting playoff teams a multi-run lead in the first and expecting to claw back every time. The talent is undeniable. The first-inning gremlins need exorcising.

The win left the Phillies just one game behind the Cubs for the top NL Wild Card spot and three games clear of San Diego for the second. They’re right in the thick of it, playing the kind of dramatic, never-say-die baseball that makes you believe something special could be brewing.
