Okay, this one is genuinely awesome, and I don’t understand why so many people got so worked up about it. Before the Springboks faced the All Blacks at Cape Town’s packed DHL Stadium on Saturday, two passenger jets roared over the 55,000-seat ground and cleared the roof by as little as 41 feet.

Naturally, it turned a cool rugby ritual into a viral “close call” that had social media clutching its pearls.

Me? I think it ruled.

Here’s what went down. Airlink, the official carrier of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series, sent two specially painted Embraer jets, one green and one black, screaming across the stadium as fireworks and smoke erupted around the roof. Flightradar24 data showed one aircraft at roughly 205 to 210 feet above sea level, and with the stadium standing about 164 feet, that left somewhere between 41 and 46 feet of clearance.

Yeah, the video makes it look even tighter, with the lead jet appearing to pitch up and some footage suggesting it flew right through the pyrotechnics. Absolutely epic stuff.

Predictably, the reaction split between awe and full-blown panic. Viewers called it “dicey” and started expecting a stern call from aviation officials and look, I get that seeing a passenger jet skim a stadium roof gets the heart rate up, especially here in America (Never Forget) but everyone needs to relax, because this was completely under control.

This wasn’t some rogue pilot going cowboy. Airlink said the pass was planned, rehearsed, and approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority. The jets carried THREE senior captains and flew at about 150 knots, well within authorized limits.

Nobody was hurt, nothing went wrong, and the whole thing revived a tradition that dates all the way back to the iconic 1995 World Cup. That’s not a disaster waiting to happen, that’s a highly coordinated, expertly executed flyover by professionals who knew exactly what they were doing.

So no, I really don’t see the issue here. This is exactly the kind of spectacle that makes big sporting moments unforgettable. A little smoke, a little fire, two jets buzzing the roof, and 55,000 people losing their minds in the best way. Give me more of this, not less. We’ve become way too soft about stuff that’s genuinely just badass.

And for the record, South Africa handled business on the field too, winning 33-26 to level the series. Great flying, great rugby, great day all around.
