Jalen Hurts GQ interview

Jalen Hurts sat down with GQ and I could have listened for three more hours

Jalen Hurts sat down with GQ for one of the more revealing interviews of his career, and I could have listened to him talk for three more hours. Didn’t matter what the topic was. Pool. His dad. Clothes. The 2018 title game. Give him a mic and let him ramble, I’m in.

But the part everyone latched onto wasn’t the small talk. It was the A.J. Brown stuff. Hurts finally admitting they “clearly” grew apart, then immediately retreating into the same answer he always gives about pursuing “the mission.” Twitter lost it. WIP spent the entire day picking that quote apart like it was the Zapruder film.

What Jalen Hurts owes Eagles fans

Here’s my problem with the whole conversation. Everybody wants a piece of Jalen Hurts that he’s never going to give you. Some fans want him to explain himself in plain English, spell it out slow enough that a toddler gets it. Some want more personality, more edge, more of whatever they think makes an athlete “likable.”

I don’t want any of that.

I want him to keep winning.

That’s it. That’s the whole ask. Hurts has been to two Super Bowls, won one, won Super Bowl MVP doing it, and the guy still sounds like he’s mad about a game he lost in college seven years ago. He told GQ he’s more attached to his losses than his wins, that sometimes it feels like there haven’t even been any wins because he’s too busy dissecting what went wrong.

The introvert admission tracks

The most relatable thing in the entire piece had nothing to do with football. Baron asked Jalen Hurts point blank if he’d call himself an introvert, and after some genuinely weird back and forth about what the word even means, Hurts landed on “I would say… yeah.”

Same, man. Same.

People act like that’s a flaw in a starting quarterback. A guy who’s supposed to be the face of the franchise, the leader in the huddle, doesn’t want to overshare his feelings with a stranger holding a recorder. Shocking. Turns out some people would rather work than talk about working. If you can’t relate to that, fine, but maybe sit with why a guy grinding his way from a college benching to a Lombardi Trophy doesn’t owe you his diary.

Because that’s really what this comes down to. If the only thing you can take from Jalen Hurts is confusion about why he won’t crack more jokes at the podium, that’s not a Hurts problem. That says a hell of a lot more about you than it does about him.

We’re fans, not his inner circle

None of us know Jalen Hurts. Not really. We know the version he lets Zach Baron see for a magazine profile, the version he lets NBC Sports Philadelphia see at a podium, the version his teammates see in the building. We don’t get the rest, and we shouldn’t expect to.

He’s not required to be your friend. He’s not required to be easy to figure out. He’s required to show up on Sundays, and he’s done that better than almost anyone who’s ever worn the jersey.

So I’ll take the two Super Bowl trips. I’ll take the MVP. I’ll take the introvert who’d rather shoot pool in silence than perform vulnerability for an audience. I’ll take the guy who thinks “let’s win” is a complete sentence, because to him, it is.

Keep being exactly who you are, Jalen Hurts. Keep winning games. Keep making Sundays worth showing up for. That’s the whole deal, and I’ll take it every single time you walk out of that tunnel.
