VJ Edgecombe is balling in the FIB World Cup Qualifying for the Bahamas

If you needed one more reason to be losing your mind over this upcoming Sixers season, VJ Edgecombe is serving it up on a silver platter over on the international stage. The 21-year-old is straight-up balling in FIBA World Cup Qualifying, and he’s THIS close to leading The Bahamas into the World Cup, which is a genuinely absurd thing to accomplish at his age. Watching this kid blossom right before a monster Sixers year is an absolute treat.

VJ Edgecombe In The Panama Game Was a Full-On Clinic

After sitting out The Bahamas’ last qualifying win over in Uruguay, VJ suited up at home in Nassau against Panama on Monday night, and everybody not wearing Panama colors was thrilled he made the trip.

VJ Edgecombe went for 25 points, five boards, and four dimes in a 100-82 win, and he torched the nets from deep, finishing 7-of-11 from behind the arc.

He went absolutely nuclear in the first half, too. VJ Edgecombe hung 22 before the break, powered by a flawless 6-of-6 from three. SIX FOR SIX from downtown in a half.

The Jumper Is CLEAN

Here’s the part that should genuinely get Sixers fans out of their seats. That outside shot, the one everybody flagged as the big question mark on his game coming out of the draft, looks flat-out improved.

Yeah, the FIBA line’s a touch shorter, I’ll give you that but VJ Edgecombe has now shot 18-of-31 from three (58.1 percent) across three qualifying games this year.

If VJ Edgecombe knocks down shots at even a respectable NBA clip, he becomes a completely different, far scarier player. Take that elite bounce, bolt on a reliable three, and suddenly you’ve got a legit two-way problem for opposing teams. Everything he’s flashing internationally says the shooting is trending exactly where you’d hope.

Here’s where it gets dicey for The Bahamas. They’re sitting fourth in the group with 12 points, two back of both Argentina and Uruguay.

The top three in the group grab automatic World Cup bids, and the better of the two fourth-place teams across both groups sneaks in too (Mexico’s got that spot in the other group right now at 13 points). So The Bahamas are smack in the mix, and they draw Argentina TWICE before it’s over, which could decide the whole thing.

The final two qualifying windows land in late November and February, right in the guts of the NBA season. Which means if The Bahamas want to punch that ticket, they’ll probably have to close it out WITHOUT VJ Edgecombe and the other NBA guys on the roster.

So VJ and company are grinding to stack up enough of a cushion NOW, while they’re available, to give their teammates a real shot at finishing the job later.
