WATCH: Western Michigan gets completely screwed in the final seconds of game vs Michigan

Buckle up, because this one is a doozy, and it’s got a controversy baked right into the middle of it. Michigan pulled off a jaw-dropping Hail Mary to stun Western Michigan 13-12 on Saturday at the Big House, but the way it happened is going to have people arguing for a long time, because the Broncos have a very legitimate gripe here.

Michigan trailed 12-7, with the game seemingly slipping away and the critics already sharpening their knives for the Wolverines. Quarterback Bryce Underwood, who’d looked disappointing for basically the entire 59 minutes and 59 seconds leading up to the final play, dropped back to his own 40-yard line and uncorked a long-distance prayer that somehow found wide receiver JJ Buchanan in the end zone.

The Big House erupted. Underwood finished 12-of-22 for 170 yards, but a huge chunk of that came on the final drive, where he completed two passes for 75 yards and the game-winner. From goat to hero in one heave.

It’s worth noting just how big an upset this nearly was. Western Michigan has NEVER beaten an AP top-20 program in its entire history, and they were a defensive stand away from doing exactly that against No. 16 Michigan. They were right there.

Here’s Where It All Gets Real Dirty For Michigan

Now the controversy, because the Broncos got hosed. Western Michigan was leading 12-7 with nine seconds left, needing just one more stop to pull off the stunning season-opening upset. Michigan had 2nd-and-10 near midfield when Underwood chucked a Hail Mary toward the back of the end zone that fell incomplete.

The Broncos started celebrating. Game over, upset secured. Right?

Wrong.

Referees reviewed the play and somehow felt compelled to put a full SECOND back on the clock, handing Michigan one more chance and on that gifted extra down, Underwood delivered the preposterous game-winner.

So the entire outcome hinged on the officials deciding to resurrect a game that had, for all intents and purposes, already ended.

Okay so the Broncos should have one

On the penultimate play, Underwood ate up about five seconds just shuffling around to find a good enough angle for his throw, clearly anticipating it would be Michigan’s last shot and the slow-motion replay showed the ball still VISIBLY in the air when the clock hit zero.

That’s not a hot take, either. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay confirmed it.

So based on the camera angles and the professional opinion of an actual rules expert, underdog Western Michigan should have won this game. They did everything they needed to do. They made the stop, the clock hit zero with the ball in the air and then the scoreboard at the Big House told a different story anyway.

That’s brutal.

Look, Michigan fans got their prayers answered by the football gods, and a Hail Mary touchdown is always going to be electric no matter how it comes about but let’s call it what it is, right?

Western Michigan got screwed by a controversial ruling on a game they earned the right to win. A program that’s never beaten a top-20 team had it in their grasp, and the officials snatched it away by putting a second back on a clock that had already expired.

The Wolverines escaped, but they didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory doing it, needing a gridiron miracle AND a generous whistle to get past a team they should’ve handled. They’ll get a real chance to prove themselves next week when No. 10 Oklahoma rolls into Ann Arbor.

This one belongs to Western Michigan in every way except the one that counts: the scoreboard. Tough way to lose a game you won. The football gods giveth, and on Saturday, they took it right out of the Broncos’ hands.
