Eagles fans were treated to a generational hate watch on Opening Night

There’s something special about hate watching. For me, along with most Eagles fans, I presume, every time the Birds aren’t playing is a hate watch. Last night hit a little more than usual, for obvious reasons.

The New England Patriots tried to get retribution on the Seattle Seahawks for embarrassing them in last year’s Super Bowl. And at first, it looked like they might have gotten it. Sam Darnold got knocked out of the game, New England got up 10-0 at halftime. But then, right on cue, the karma of all the bullshit the Patriots did over the offseason hit like a freight train: the AJ Brown antics, Mike Vrabel going to therapy for cheating on his wife instead of getting his team prepared, and their fans — their awful, pitiful fans — chirping all offseason about how Brown is going to light it up with MVP runner-up Drake Maye throwing him the ball.

I watched the Super Bowl last year. I know what Drake Maye is. A Mickey Mouse quarterback who needs everything to go right to succeed. He’s what Patriots fans claim Jalen Hurts is. The irony isn’t lost on me. New England fans are blinded by the white boy with a cannon. We’ve all been there. They’ll learn sooner or later.

The hate watch really began in the second half, once the Pats got complacent and Maye started to unravel.

First, AJ Brown left the game with an ankle injury. There’s been no word on the severity, and obviously, I don’t wish injury on anyone. I hope he recovers fully. Nevertheless, I do believe in karma. You can’t be a shitty teammate for an entire season, quit on your team, and constantly talk out of your ass to the media and get away with it. Unfortunately, the karma manifested as an injury on opening night.

Then we have Drake Maye, the guy who was supposed to help get AJ back to elite status. In reality, it seemed like he did everything in his power to prevent AJ from being happy. In the first half, on a flea flicker, Maye underthrew Brown horrendously. It did lead to a PI call and a touchdown, but I can only imagine the things that would’ve been said about Hurts had he put this on tape.

This was only the beginning of Maye’s disasterclass.

In the second half, all he wanted to do was give Seattle an opportunity to get back in the game. The first pick was a 50/50 ball to Romeo Doubs that was thrown inside rather than along the sideline, resulting in a tipped pick. His second INT was worse, getting read like a book by Julian Love on a seam route. Then to cap it all off, Maye threw arguably the worst INT I’ve ever seen with just seconds left on the clock and his team already in field goal range.

This is the guy we’re supposed to believe is light years better than Jalen Hurts. Okay.

What a horrific way to start your season. It really doesn’t get any worse than that, but for Eagles fans, God was it a beaut.

Is this what heaven feels like, AJ? I gotta say, I thought that was a bit much when you first said it. I get it now. This does feel pretty damn good.
