Jared Young is done for the year after collision with Nolan McLean during Phillies-Mets

Scary moment during the Phillies’ win in Queens the other night, when Mets first baseman Jared Young took a knee to the head in a collision with pitcher Nolan McLean, and now we’ve got an update. Young will miss the rest of the season, but the important part is that the outlook on his health is genuinely good.

Quick refresh. Sixth inning, Mets down 1-0, Justin Crawford hit a slow roller toward first, and as McLean came off the mound to cover, his knee caught Jared Young flush in the head. Young went face-first to the ground and lay motionless.

Thankfully, the news since has been reassuring across the board. He gave a thumbs-up being carted off, a hospital CT scan came back negative, he had full use of his extremities, and he was discharged overnight.

Interim manager Andy Green said Friday that Young was home and doing about as well as you could hope, with encouraging test results. He’s got headaches and some short-term memory loss, which comes with the territory on a concussion, but he’s reportedly kept his sense of humor through it, and the club is optimistic about a full recovery with no concerns about him playing again.

The Mets placed him on the seven-day concussion IL and recalled Ronny Mauricio, with Baty, Vientos, and Morel expected to share first base down the stretch. Tough way to cap what was a nice breakout for Young, who hit .266 with nine homers and 39 RBIs in 103 games in his first full big-league season.
