Report: Eagles could be facing Case Keenum, the Bears’ third-string QB, on Monday night

Eagles fans should start getting comfortable with the name Case Keenum, because he might be the guy standing across from Vic Fangio’s defense on Monday night.

Chicago’s quarterback situation has fallen apart in the span of a week. Caleb Williams is dealing with a hamstring injury from Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. The imaging came back better than expected, and head coach Ben Johnson said the injury shouldn’t cost Williams significant time, but Johnson also wouldn’t commit to him playing Monday. His exact words: “I’m not putting a timeline on this.” That’s coach-speak for don’t count on it.

The plan was for backup Tyson Bagent to step in. He signed a two-year, $10 million extension last summer for exactly this kind of moment. Instead, Bagent landed in the concussion protocol this week, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That knocks out option two.

Which brings us to Case Keenum.

Keenum is 38 years old. He hasn’t taken a regular-season snap since 2023 with the Texans. He’s a journeyman in the truest sense — Texans, Rams, Vikings, Broncos, Washington, Browns, Bills, back to the Texans — but he does have a real history against the Eagles, and none of it is good for Chicago.

In Week 1 of the 2019 season, Keenum started for Washington and actually played well. He went 30-for-44 for 380 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions. The Eagles won anyway, 32-27.

Then there’s the 2017 NFC Championship Game. Keenum was the Vikings’ starter that night at the Linc, and the Eagles buried them 38-7 on their way to Super Bowl LII. Keenum’s night included a first-quarter interception that Patrick Robinson returned 50 yards for a touchdown, and Minnesota never recovered.

So the sample size says a lot of yards, a couple of Keenum touchdowns, and two Eagles wins.

Eagles are already favored, and this makes the math worse for Chicago

The Eagles are 2-0. The Bears are 1-1 and now walking into Monday night, at home, likely down to a 38-year-old who hasn’t played a snap in almost two years. Vegas has already reacted — the Eagles moved to 4.5-point favorites on FanDuel, and that number reflects the injury news, not just the records.

None of this means the game is automatic. Keenum has 66 career starts. He knows how to operate an offense, and he’s shown before he can put up numbers against this exact opponent. But asking a quarterback with almost two years of rust to walk into Soldier Field against a Fangio defense, on a short week of prep, with the head coach already hedging on his own QB1’s availability, is not the situation any team wants heading into a Monday night game.

The Eagles didn’t ask for this version of the Bears. They’ll take it.
