Trevor Zegras Jersey Tuck Penalty

The NHL handed Trevor Zegras a penalty for “improperly wearing equipment” because his jersey was tucked into his pants

Leave Trevor Zegras alone, NHL. You typically don’t see this kind of soft nonsense, which is exactly why this one is so baffling. In a game against Boston the other night, Trevor Zegras got sent to the box for a two-minute minor for “improperly wearing equipment” because he started his shift with his jersey tucked into his pants.

That’s the crime. A tucked-in jersey. Two minutes. I’m sorry, what are we doing here?

Trevor Zegras got handed a style penalty

Obviously, this is completely ridiculous and if you look around the league over the years, Trevor Zegras is far from the first guy to ever do this. Tucking in a jersey?! Alex Ovechkin has done it basically his entire career. Gretzky did it too, by the way.

So now, all of a sudden, it’s a penalty? What even counts? Is it just the full back tuck? Is a side tuck okay but a back tuck isn’t? What in the world are we doing over here?

This might genuinely be the dumbest rule I’ve ever watched get implemented in sports. It has zero effect on the game and it’s asinine to enforce because it changes absolutely nothing about how hockey is played.

This is the kind of thing that makes the entire league look petty and small. This is what happens when the NHL doesn’t have any actual problems to deal with. They get bored and just start inventing new ones out of thin air.

Here’s my theory on the timing, because it’s not a coincidence.

Viewership is going up, the league is clearly ready to start covering player uniforms in advertisements, so I guess now’s the perfect time to set a new “standard” for how those jerseys have to look.

Can’t have a tucked jersey obscuring a future sponsor patch, right? Follow the money and this suddenly makes a lot more sense. It’s not about the integrity of the uniform. It’s about protecting ad space.

It’s not just tucked jerseys they’re cracking down on, either. They’re going after visor tilt too. Think about how much refs already have to track out there. The game is absurdly fast, the margins are razor-thin, and they already miss plenty of legitimate calls as it is.

So the last thing the NHL should be doing is having its officials waste any of their limited attention on irrelevant garbage like a jersey being tucked or a visor sitting a touch too far back. Let them focus on, you know, the actual hockey.

Free Trevor Zegras. Let the man tuck his jersey in peace. This is the kind of self-inflicted, made-up nonsense that gives a great sport a bad name. There are real things to worry about, and how a player wears his jersey is nowhere on that list.
