Injury Report: Eagles get major injury news break as Bears rule out Caleb Williams for Monday night
The Eagles caught a significant break ahead of Monday Night Football against the Bears: Chicago has officially ruled out starting quarterback Caleb Williams with a hamstring injury, ending his streak of never having missed a game since entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2024. Williams had started all 36 regular-season games and both playoff contests of his career before this.
In his place, the Bears will turn to either Tyson Bagent or veteran Case Keenum, and it may not be settled until close to kickoff. Bagent, who relieved Williams last Sunday against the Vikings, suffered a concussion in that game and missed practice Wednesday and Friday. He returned to full practice Saturday but remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol and is listed as questionable. Keenum, in his 14th NFL season, is the fallback option if Bagent isn’t cleared.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson didn’t tip his hand on a starter. “There’s a different skill set, obviously. One guy’s a little bit more mobile than the other, and yet both are very cerebral players,” Johnson said, adding the staff will “come together” and decide closer to game time.
Eagles injury report: Three ruled out, Greenard trending up
For the Eagles, the injury news is more straightforward. Wide receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle), tight end Dallas Goedert (knee), and tackle Fred Johnson (knee) have all been ruled out for Monday night. Johnson was a late addition to the injury list Saturday after practicing Friday.
The bigger story is outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard, who was a full participant in practice Saturday for the first time all season. Greenard has been out since Week 1 with a pectoral injury and is now questionable for Monday.
“I had a pretty solid week. Even last week was solid,” Greenard said Saturday. “Just kind of like I said before, just leaving it up to the coaches and staff, how did I look? And that answer will come pretty soon. I’m pretty optimistic. I’m ready to get out there.”
Leading receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring) was upgraded to full participation Saturday after being limited Friday and sitting out entirely Thursday. He’s good to go, as is running back Tank Bigsby (abdomen), who was also full Saturday. Running back Will Shipley (foot) remained limited but is cleared to play, joining Saquon Barkley (stinger), Jalen Carter (wrist), Andrew Mukuba (knee), and Tyler Steen (shoulder) — all full participants and available Monday.
Barkley, who took a stinger on the first play from scrimmage against the Titans last week, called it a “wake-up call.” He was limited to four carries in that game before Tank Bigsby took over the bulk of the workload.
What it means for the Eagles-Bears matchup
Zach Ertz isn’t on the injury report, but his conditioning is a factor in whether he gets elevated from the practice squad. He hasn’t played a game in nine and a half months. “My body feels good. Obviously, a little rusty,” Ertz said Saturday. “Now it’s up to the coaches to see how the week went.”
On the Bears’ side, everyone outside the quarterback situation is clear. Defensive tackle Grady Jarrett (rest), running back Kyle Monangai (knee), kicker Cairo Santos (right hip), cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (hamstring), and offensive lineman Joe Thuney (rest) are all good to go. Chicago also has linebacker Noah Sewell and defensive lineman Shemar Turner ruled out on Reserve/PUP.
With Williams sidelined, the Eagles will face a Bears offense running through a backup quarterback for the first time this season — a notable edge heading into Monday night.
