Sixers Media Day: Black throwbacks return, Crypto.com patch is gone

Sixers Media Day hasn’t even started yet and the organization already got two things right. The black throwback jerseys are coming back this season, and the Crypto.com patch is officially dead.

There was a lot of speculation that we’d never see Jaylen Brown and LeBron James in the blacks, and I’m glad that turned out to be wrong. Those jerseys are a staple in this city, and putting them on this roster was the only move that made sense.

The Full Jersey Lineup:

The Sixers are rolling with blue, red and cream this season, plus two black looks. The other black jersey is a story for a different day but it’s something to do with Nike and them are force feeding some shitty design on the NBA but outside of that, it’s a strong set. The blue and red are the bread and butter, the cream has grown on everybody, and the blacks are the ones fans actually want to see.

Bloom Energy Replaces Crypto.com:

The new jersey patch belongs to Bloom Energy, which announced a multi-year partnership with the Sixers Monday morning as the team’s Official Jersey Patch Partner.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know much about Bloom before today, but this is a massive upgrade over Crypto.com. That patch never fit this team or this city, and it always felt like the Sixers were just cashing a check from whoever was trendy at the time.

Bloom is actually local. The company makes clean power systems, and its second-largest manufacturing hub is in Newark, Delaware, just a few miles from Philly. It’s been a major employer in the area for close to 15 years and has nearly 1,200 employees in Delaware alone. It also has more than 1,000 deployments across the country, powering hospitals, college campuses, data centers and plenty of big-name companies.

The Sixers and Bloom are putting together a seven-figure community investment in the Greater Philadelphia area. Bloom will be involved in the Jr. 76ers Summer Hoops Tour, a court refurbishment somewhere in the region, and days of service where Sixers and Bloom staff work together. Bloom is also taking over as the jersey sponsor for the Delaware Blue Coats, the Sixers’ G League affiliate that’s been in Delaware since 2013.

Both Tad Brown and Bloom founder and CEO KR Sridhar made the same point in the announcement: this deal is about strengthening the community around the team. That’s corporate language, sure, but it lands a lot better coming from a company that employs people down I-95 than it ever did from a crypto exchange.

The organization has made plenty of mistakes over the years, and I’ve been the first to call them out. This one they nailed. Black jerseys back, a local sponsor on the chest, and a season that’s already carrying a ton of hype.
