Eagles get run out of Soldier Field by third-string Bears QB Case Keenum in 27-7 loss

The Eagles lost to a third-string quarterback on Monday night and earned every point of it.

Chicago won 27-7 at Soldier Field behind Case Keenum, a 38-year-old on his eighth NFL team who had not started a game since 2023. Keenum went 24 of 34 for 247 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, and he added a rushing touchdown. Caleb Williams was out with a hamstring injury and Tyson Bagent was not cleared from concussion protocol until Sunday. The Bears still put 27 on this defense.

It was the first loss of the season for the Eagles (2-1) and their first by 20 or more points since Week 14 of 2023 against the Cowboys.

Andy Dalton’s interception flipped the game

Chicago opened with an 11-play, 66-yard touchdown drive. Keenum went 5 of 6 on it and safety Marcus Epps missed two tackles. On the Eagles’ second possession, Tank Bigsby fumbled and the Bears took over at the Philadelphia 15. Quinyon Mitchell broke up a fourth-down throw and Chicago came away empty.

Then the Eagles drove from their own 3 to the doorstep of the end zone. Hurts took a late hit out of bounds. The Bears were flagged, and Hurts was sent to the medical tent for a concussion evaluation anyway. The tush push went with him. Andy Dalton came in and threw a third-down pass into the back of the end zone, right to rookie safety Dillon Thieneman.

Hurts screamed in frustration when he saw it. Sirianni called the sequence “obviously frustrating” at halftime. Seven points turned into a 29-yard Cairo Santos field goal and a 10-0 Chicago lead with 1:52 left in the half.

Hurts scored on a tush push as time expired to make it 10-7. That should have been the floor.

It was the ceiling.

The Eagles offense disappeared after halftime

The first three Eagles possessions of the second half were three-and-outs. Chicago outscored Philadelphia 17-0 after the break.

Hurts went 6 of 12 for 42 yards with an interception in the second half, a 23.6 passer rating. Philadelphia managed 62 total yards over the final two quarters. Saquon Barkley had 11 carries for 73 yards in the first half and 4 carries for 9 yards in the second, after the Eagles abandoned the left and middle runs that had been working.

Earlier in the third quarter, the Eagles ran a fake tush push on fourth-and-1 that fooled nobody. A drive later they went for it on fourth-and-5 from the Bears’ 46, and Hurts locked onto DeVonta Smith and threw it to T.J. Edwards. Hurts had as many interceptions in the third quarter as the Eagles had first downs.

Hurts finished 16 of 25 for 153 yards and a 64.2 rating with one completion of 20 yards or more. He took an intentional grounding penalty on the first series and missed an open Barkley on the second. The offense was 2 of 9 on third down.

The Eagles defense could not tackle or cover

The defensive plan was to stop the run after Chicago ran through them last year. It worked. D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai combined for under 100 yards until late in the fourth quarter. Keenum threw all over them instead.

Nobody on the Eagles’ defensive line got a sack. Jalen Carter did not record a pressure on 30 pass-rush snaps, the first time that has happened in his career, per Sports Illustrated. Kalif Raymond ran wide open through the middle of the secondary for a 41-yard touchdown. Keenum drew Moro Ojomo offside on fourth-and-2 to keep alive the drive that made it 27-7.

Riq Woolen was flagged for holding and illegal contact in the first half. Penalties wiped out a 19-yard Barkley run and a 21-yard Britain Covey punt return.

Sirianni, Mannion and Fangio had no answers

Halftime is where a coaching staff earns its money. Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio got a full halftime to fix it and neither adjustment took. Ben Johnson was a step ahead of Fangio all night. Mannion’s screen game lost yards again, and Hurts had to bail out a questionable screen to Smith late in the first half.

Sirianni is the head coach. This team played with no energy and no plan, and the sideline had nothing to change it.

The Eagles are 2-1 with the Rams at home Sunday at 1 p.m. The warning signs were there. They needed to stop a two-point conversion to beat Washington and needed a touchdown with nine seconds left to beat a Titans team that is now 0-3. Monday night was the bill for those two games.
