The Eagles’ screen game is historically bad, and if Mannion continues running them, his body and soul must be sacrificed to Baal for eternal pain and suffering

As I get older, I can be pretty forgiving towards the Eagles. I know the drill with this team. Every year, there will be at least 1-2 games that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about them. Monday night was one of those games, but it was only Week 3. I’m willing to wait this one out a little longer.

What I am not willing to forgive, however, is Sean Mannion’s horrendous screen game. Once upon a time, the Eagles used to have one of the best screen packages in football. Now, it’s historically bad.

Through three weeks, Philly has completed 9 of 13 screen passes for a total of -8 yards. The only screen pass this entire season that gained positive yardage was the one to DeVonta Smith at the end of the half on Monday night. And the reason that play even worked was because it was a stupid play call and Chicago wasn’t expecting the Eagles to run a screen with 19 seconds on the clock and no timeouts. It all worked out in the end because Jalen Hurts saved them with an emergency tush push, but it still doesn’t justify the play call.

We saw more emotion out of Hurts on Monday night than we’ve seen… ever? Getting taken out for a concussion check only to see your backup throw a meatball sub on the one-yard line is hard enough. When your coaching staff is actively doing stupid shit to undermine the offense, that’s a whole other dilemma.

After the emergency tush push at the end of the half, Hurts was pissed. It doesn’t take a professional lip reader to see what he’s saying in this clip right after the play.

Monday night’s game was a lot of things. It was an ass kicking through and through. I’m not letting the players off the hook by any means here either, but it’s abundantly clear how outmatched the coaching staff was. Chicago has one of the best staffs in the league, I won’t take that away from them. They also don’t thoroughly embarrass other teams like this on a weekly basis.

Mannion’s screen game epitomizes the stupidity. Every time they run one, you can see it from a mile away. The orbit motion across the formation is so telegraphed it hurts. On top of that, the Eagles’ receivers are not blocking it well at all. The worst part is that Mannion seems to run it when they’re in a first or second and 10, thinking it’ll be a quick 4-5 yard gain to setup a manageable third down. Again, just to drive the point home, they have had one positive gain on 13 screen plays through three weeks.

These plays are actively hurting the offense. It’s basically the equivalent of taking a sack.

None of it makes sense, and the more I write about it, the more pissed I get, so I’ll leave it here. Just throw out all the screen plays you have and start over. For everyone’s sake.
