Phillies Arbitration Projections: Duran Is Worth Every Penny, and a Couple Guys Shouldn’t Be Back

MLB Trade Rumors released its arbitration projections, and here’s what the Phillies are looking at for their arbitration-eligible players:

Projected Salaries for Arbitration Eligible Phillies

Projected Salaries:

  • Jhoan Duran: $10.9 million
  • Bryson Stott: $9.2 million
  • Brandon Marsh: $8.3 million
  • Derek Hill: $1.5 million
  • Orion Kerkering: $1.5 million
  • Tanner Banks: $1.4 million
  • Bryan De La Cruz: $1.2 million
  • Rafael Marchan: $1 million
  • Garrett Stubbs: $1 million

That’s about $36 million total if the Phillies keep everyone, and they shouldn’t keep everyone.

Duran at $10.9 million is a no-brainer. Game 1 didn’t go his way, but he’s the only reliever on this roster anyone trusted all season, and closers like him go for a lot more than that on the open market. Pay the man and build the rest of the bullpen around him instead of asking him to get six outs because nobody else can.

Stott at $9.2 million is an easy call. He showed at third base how much his glove can do, and he’s a big part of the infield puzzle with Bohm and Arraez both headed to free agency.

Marsh at $8.3 million is a different story. That’s real money for a platoon outfielder who sits against lefties, and the Phillies can find a better everyday corner bat with that $8.3 million instead of paying for half a player.

Let Marsh walk. Duran and Stott are both entering their final year of team control, so this is also the winter to decide whether either one is part of the long-term plan.

The cheaper names are where the Phillies have to be smart.

Kerkering, De La Cruz and Stubbs should all be non-tendered. Kerkering at $1.5 million isn’t a lot of money, but this bullpen needs an overhaul, and that starts with clearing out arms that haven’t earned a spot instead of bringing them back out of habit.

De La Cruz and Stubbs are easy cuts, and nobody should lose sleep if any of the three are gone. Hill, Banks and Marchan are depth pieces at depth prices, and keeping them comes down to what Dombrowski does with the rest of the roster.

With raises already coming for Schwarber, Luzardo, Keller and Sánchez, every dollar here matters. The Phillies can’t afford to waste money on depth guys when the bullpen and lineup both need real upgrades.
