Los Angeles outgained the Birds 415 yards to 172 and had 26 first downs to 12. Philadelphia led at the break because Matthew Stafford threw two interceptions. It lost because the offense produced nothing after it.

How the Eagles built a 20-10 halftime lead

Andrew Mukuba intercepted Stafford in the first quarter, the first takeaway of the season for the Eagles, and returned it to the Rams’ 28. Jake Elliott kicked a 29-yard field goal for the first points of the game. After Harrison Mevis tied it at 3-3 from 40 yards, Elliott hit a 56-yarder in the second quarter to put the Birds back in front.

Darius Cooper caught both of Jalen Hurts’ touchdown passes. The first was an 18-yarder over Quentin Lake that made it 13-3. After Puka Nacua ran in from the 3 to cut it to 13-10, Cooper DeJean intercepted Stafford with 34 seconds left in the half and returned it 25 yards. A pass interference penalty on Trent McDuffie moved the ball to the 10, and Hurts found Cooper again with nine seconds on the clock. Cooper finished with three catches for 33 yards and led the Birds in receiving with DeVonta Smith out.

The Eagles offense scored nothing in the second half

The Birds went 0-for-12 on third down. They finished with 172 net yards, 12 first downs and four sacks allowed for 25 yards. Hurts completed 12 of 24 passes for 93 yards. Tank Bigsby had 14 carries for 55 yards. Counting the Monday night loss in Chicago, the Eagles are 2-for-21 on third down over their last two games.

The Eagles opened the second half with a three-and-out. Late in the third quarter, Hurts was stopped short on a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak from the Eagles’ own 38. “Poor execution,” Hurts said afterward.

The Eagles played without Smith, linebacker Zack Baun and right tackle Lane Johnson. Saquon Barkley left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return. Quinyon Mitchell also left with an injury in the third quarter. Rookie Markel Bell started at tackle, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. had 15 tackles in place of Baun.

Sirianni’s fourth-and-goal call cost the Eagles three points

Up 20-10 with 7:31 left, the Eagles had put together a drive that included four first downs and took 6:40 off the clock. Facing fourth-and-goal from the 2, Nick Sirianni kept the offense on the field instead of kicking a field goal that would have made it 23-10. Hurts, under immediate pressure, threw off his back foot and missed Cooper in the end zone.

Sirianni said he wanted a three-score game and took responsibility: “that’s on me.”

The Rams took over at their own 2 and drove 98 yards in nine plays. On third-and-10, Jonathan Jones hit Kyren Williams late out of bounds after a wheel route, which moved the ball to the Eagles’ 13. Williams scored from the 1 with 3:59 left to make it 20-17. Before Sunday, the Eagles were 41-0 with Hurts when leading by double digits in the final five minutes, according to CBS Sports Research.

The Eagles went three-and-out, and Stafford got the ball back. Williams ran 7 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:17 left, breaking tackles from Trotter and Michael Carter II on the way. Byron Young then sacked Hurts twice on the final drive, one of them a strip that Bell recovered. Kam Curl broke up Hurts’ deep pass on fourth-and-25 to end it.

The Eagles defense held up until the end

The Eagles defense intercepted Stafford twice, broke up nine passes, held the Rams scoreless in the third quarter and forced a turnover on downs to open the fourth. Stafford still finished 32 of 51 for 317 yards. Nacua had nine catches for 125 yards in his first game back from injury. Williams ran 16 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns. The Rams scored 14 straight points to win.

The Eagles scored 20 points in the first half and none in the second. They went 0-for-12 on third down. They led by 10 with 7:31 left and lost. A field goal made it 23-10, and the Eagles passed on it.
