LeBron James’ helicopter has NBA owners using Pablo Torre as their hired gun
LeBron James rides a Fanatics helicopter from New York to Philadelphia, and NBA owners are texting Pablo Torre about it.
What Pablo Torre Said About LeBron James
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported James is commuting by helicopter after signing with the Sixers. Front Office Sports and TMZ reported it is a Fanatics helicopter, covered by his endorsement deal. TMZ puts comparable charters at $6,000 to $9,000 each way. FOS says a small handful of other athletes with big Fanatics deals get the same access.
Torre told FOS the story is “something of interest to the league.” Then he said: “We’re also getting tips from NBA owners, who are sending me your story, being like, ‘What is this?’”
NBA Owners Went to Pablo Torre Instead of the League Office
The league has a rulebook and a cap department. If an owner thinks a LeBron James endorsement perk breaks something, there is a front door for that.
They went to the guy whose staff won a Pulitzer for the Clippers investigation, the one that ended with the NBA penalizing the Clippers in September.
That makes this a leak with a podcast attached. There is no established evidence of a violation. A company gave its spokesman a ride. He lives in New York. The drive is two hours.
LeBron James Is the Wrong Example
Making an example out of LeBron James is bad business for everyone, including the NBA. He is the all-time leading scorer, and he opens his Sixers regular season next Tuesday at the Knicks. The league wants that game watched.
Spare me the lecture on outside money until the leagues answer for their sportsbook billions. Then LeBron James can answer for a helicopter.
Until then, leave LeBron James alone.
Let the man land.
