Jalen Hurts is OUT against the Panthers with a Blood Clot and the Eagles Injury Report is a Horror Show
This Eagles season keeps finding new ways to get worse. Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers with a superficial blood clot in his calf, the team announced Thursday. If you were counting on Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith riding in to save the day, Wednesday’s injury report has some bad news for you too.
Jalen Hurts OUT on Sunday due to a superficial blood clot
The Timeline Raises Some Real Questions:
The Eagles laid out the whole sequence, and it’s not a comforting read. Jalen Hurts got cleated in the calf during the Rams game on Oct. 4. He didn’t ask for treatment right away, practiced in full that Wednesday and Thursday, and didn’t go to the training room about it until after practice on Thursday, Oct. 8. He got treated again Friday, practiced in full and was added to the practice report.
On Saturday, after the team flew to London and held its walkthrough, the Eagles ran an ultrasound out of an abundance of caution and found the clot. The medical staff and doctors in London decided that staying active was important and that Hurts could safely play, with a follow-up ultrasound recommended within 72 hours of the game and the flight home.
So Jalen Hurts played every snap against the Jaguars, flew back across the Atlantic, got treatment Monday and Tuesday and practiced fully on Wednesday. Then Wednesday night’s follow-up ultrasound showed the clot had moved. Now he’s out while the team figures out how to treat it, and the Eagles say they’ve kept the league office in the loop the whole time.
I’m not a doctor, and the team says every step was cleared by the people who are but everyone in Philly is going to ask the same question.
Why was a quarterback with a known blood clot playing a full NFL game and then sitting on a seven-plus-hour flight in the same 48 hours? Long flights and blood clots aren’t a mix anyone takes lightly.
The Eagles clearly took it seriously enough to scan him, follow up and loop in the league, but the end result is the franchise quarterback dealing with a clot that’s on the move. That’s a lot scarier than a sore calf.
None of the football matters until Jalen Hurts is right.
This isn’t a “play through it” injury, and the Eagles need to take every bit of time the doctors want, whether that’s one week or several. He’s the guy this entire franchise is built around. Nobody should want him back a second before everyone is completely comfortable.
The Rest of the Injury Report Is Ugly:
Here’s how Wednesday’s practice report looked. Keep in mind, Hurts was still listed as a full participant before the clot news came out that night.

“ITS THE WHOLE TEAM!”
Barkley and Smith both sitting out Wednesday’s practice is a gut punch. Earlier this week there was real hope that one or both could be back for the Panthers. Now, with neither on the field, that’s looking a lot less likely. Shipley is out with the foot injury, which means the backfield could once again be Dameon Pierce, Carson Steele and Jaydon Blue. We all saw how Pierce did in London.
The receiver room isn’t much better. Smith didn’t practice, and Hollywood Brown and Wicks were both limited. Darius Cooper and Makai Lemon might be carrying the passing game again, and now they’ll be catching passes from someone other than Hurts.
That someone is likely Tanner McKee, who’s next up after the Eagles released Andy Dalton. He’d be making the start behind an offensive line that’s still finding its footing, with Dickerson limited in his first week back from IR, Steen limited with his shoulder and Kendall still not practicing.
The defense has some good news, at least. Baun, Carter and Campbell were all full participants, and Greenard getting in a limited session is a step in the right direction after he missed London. But Hunt and Michael Carter II both sat out, and the edge and nickel spots are still thin.
Rock Bottom, or Close to It:
The Eagles are 2-3, they’ve lost three straight, the offense is the worst in football and now the quarterback is out with a blood clot. This was supposed to be the week the cavalry came back. Instead, it might be McKee, Pierce and a whole lot of prayers against the Panthers.

When it rains it pours. The Phillies kicked it off and are on my shitlist. For those who don’t see a connection, I can insure you there is one. It’s the butterfly effect on Philly sports right now and there’s no end in sight.
