Jalen Hurts is out for the season with blood clots in his lungs, ending the Eagles’ year
Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the 2026 season after doctors discovered multiple blood clots in his lungs, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, released a joint statement Monday. The updated diagnosis is deep vein thrombosis plus bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning clots in both lungs. Jalen Hurts is “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations,” per the statement. The prognosis is very good and a full recovery is expected.
Treatment is blood thinners only. While on them, Hurts cannot take part in contact activities, football included. Rapoport reports the treatment will take at least three months. The team expects Jalen Hurts to resume contact football once he is off the medication. He will stay around the team and keep conditioning in the meantime.
How the Jalen Hurts blood clot timeline played out
According to the Eagles’ own statement, Hurts was cleated in the Rams game on October 4 and first sought treatment for his calf on Thursday, October 8. After the team flew to London, an ultrasound on Saturday showed a superficial blood clot. The team’s medical staff and doctors in London concluded he could safely play. He played, throwing for 220 yards and a touchdown in the 19-17 loss.
A follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night showed movement in the clot. He was ruled out for the Panthers game and placed on injured reserve Saturday. The team says it stayed in communication with the league office throughout. That is the sequence as the Eagles lay it out.
Before the diagnosis, Jalen Hurts had completed 57.8 percent of his passes for 933 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions in five games. He added 107 rushing yards and a score. He appeared in 48 of a possible 51 games from 2023 to 2025. Availability was never the problem.
The Eagles’ season is over without Jalen Hurts
This is a lost season. Tanner McKee started in Hurts’ place against Carolina and went 26 of 45 for 215 yards and one touchdown in a 25-14 loss. It was his third NFL start. The Eagles are 2-4. Nothing about that game suggested this offense survives three months without Jalen Hurts.
Yes, the NFC East is garbage. Washington entered Monday night at 1-3-1 after last week’s tie, and the Giants lost at home to the Saints. It does not matter. A weak division can get a team into the playoffs. It cannot get a team through January with a backup quarterback.
The Eagles came into this season chasing a sixth straight playoff appearance and a third straight division title. That chase is over.
What’s left is hoping the guys still in uniform make it fun to watch. McKee gets the rest of the year to show something. Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith need to produce, and the defense needs to carry real weight. That is the entire season now.
Jalen Hurts is expected to make a full recovery with no long-term effects. That is the only part of this story that matters going forward.
