Union lock up homegrown defender Neil Pierre through 2031
The Philadelphia Union just made one of the smartest moves they’ll make all year. Homegrown defender Neil Pierre has signed a new contract that runs through the 2030-31 season, with a club option for 2031-32.
Union lock up Neil Pierre through 2031
Neil Pierre is only 19, and he’s already one of the best young players in the league. In 14 MLS appearances this season, he’s scored four goals, which is a new Union record for goals in a season by a defender.
He’s been a big part of the back line as the Union have climbed the Eastern Conference standings, and MLS ranked him No. 7 on its 2026 22 Under 22 list.
His year didn’t start in Philly either. Neil Pierre originally signed as a Homegrown on Feb. 4, 2025, then went on loan to Danish side Lyngby Boldklub on Jan. 22 of this year as part of the Union’s partnership with the club.
All he did there was score four goals in 10 appearances and help Lyngby win the Danish second-tier title. Then he came back and kept producing.
He’s also on the national team radar. After playing for the U.S. at the U-17 and U-19 levels, Pierre earned his first senior USMNT call-up this year. After the way the World Cup ended, the national team needs young players like him to keep developing, and the Union just guaranteed he’ll be doing it in Philadelphia.
This is exactly how the Union pipeline is supposed to work. Pierre came up through YSC Academy, the Union Academy and Philadelphia Union II before earning his spot with the first team. Now he’s locked up for the next five years. Huge win.
