Report: Eagles won’t trade Saquon Barkley before the deadline
The Eagles will not trade Saquon Barkley before next week’s deadline, sources told NFL Network. ESPN published the report from Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport on Sunday morning.
Philadelphia is 2-5. Jalen Hurts is hurt, and so are many others. That puts Howie Roseman in a rare spot as a potential seller at a deadline where he is usually a buyer. Trade talks have involved some Birds players as Roseman looks for future draft pick compensation. Barkley is not one of them.
Why the Eagles Are Keeping Saquon Barkley
The Eagles have made it clear to other teams that they are not considering a Barkley trade, according to the report. Roseman and the Eagles believe they have enough talent to compete in 2027 and beyond. Barkley is 29, with two years and just over $35 million left on his contract.
That is a defensible position. Selling a 29-year-old running back on a losing team brings back a draft pick. Keeping him is a bet that the Eagles are 2-5 because of injuries and not because of the roster. Roseman is making that bet.
Barkley’s Health Before Eagles vs. Commanders
Barkley is slated to play Sunday night against the Washington Commanders. He played only 10 snaps last Monday against the Dallas Cowboys because of a back injury. The back flared up during the loss as he compensated for a pre-existing hamstring injury.
He missed practice Wednesday and Thursday and was limited Friday. He is not 100%. This is also shaping up to be the first of his three seasons with the Eagles without a playoff appearance.
Barkley told reporters Friday, “I like playing football.” He said that if he has the opportunity to play, he will try his best to do it.
Jonathan Taylor Is the Top Running Back Left on the Trade Market
With Barkley off the market, Colts running back Jonathan Taylor is the lone top-tier back available by trade. Sources told ESPN and NFL Network that Indianapolis is now open to moving him before the Nov. 10 deadline.
The Eagles could still add a player if the price is right and Roseman sees that player as part of the long-term plan. Roseman has until Nov. 10 to make his moves. The Eagles will make them without trading their running back.
