Sixers beat Hornets 109-104 as Tyrese Maxey scores 38 and VJ Edgecombe hits another clutch three
The Sixers beat the Charlotte Hornets 109-104 on Saturday night at Spectrum Center to improve to 6-1, and they did it without LeBron James or Joel Embiid.
James (back management) and Embiid (foot management) sat out the second night of a back-to-back, one day after Philadelphia beat the Knicks. Tyrese Maxey scored 38 points, and VJ Edgecombe hit the biggest shot of the night for the second game in a row.
Sixers Rally From Seven Down in the Final Four Minutes
Charlotte looked like the winner late. Grayson Allen hit his seventh three-pointer to put the Hornets up 101-94 with 3:41 left. The Sixers finished the game on a 15-3 run.
Maxey tied it with a free throw at 1:22 and made the second to put the Sixers ahead. Edgecombe’s three came in the final minute, a stepback over Allen after his drive to the lane went nowhere. It capped a rough night for him (10 points on 4-of-13), and the Sixers’ defense held Charlotte to three points over the last 3:41.
The Sixers dug the hole early. Charlotte, a bottom-ranked offense coming in, scored 37 points in the first quarter behind Allen and Brandon Miller, and the Hornets hit 6 of 11 from three in that quarter. Philadelphia led 57-54 at the half and trailed 83-77 after three quarters. Allen finished with 27 points off the bench on 9-of-12 shooting, and Miller had 24.
Tyrese Maxey Carries the Sixers Again
Maxey went 13-of-23 from the field and 4-of-9 from three with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. He had 19 points in the first half. He played nearly 38 minutes Friday and 38 more Saturday, and he is averaging 28.2 points per game, tied for third in the NBA.
The Sixers made him work too hard in the third quarter. For roughly four straight minutes they ran switch-hunting screens and isolations with a small lineup, and Maxey had to win one-on-one matchups while the whole team looked tired. He kept making plays anyway.
Simons, Walker and Wade Fill the Gaps
Anfernee Simons scored 19 off the bench, his third straight strong game after 21 and 20, and he closed the first half on a personal run that swung the game. Jabari Walker returned from a three-game absence with a left knee issue and scored 12 with six rebounds, including a fourth-quarter three that cut the deficit to three. Dean Wade scored four points and missed all three of his three-point attempts, but he grabbed five rebounds, handed out a career-high 10 assists and came up with an offensive rebound that led to a Simons three late.
Jaylen Brown had 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting with four rebounds, four assists and three turnovers. He missed Friday’s game with left patellar tendinopathy and had midrange jumpers blocked early on Saturday. Edgecombe added eight rebounds, but his drives started too far from the rim all night and his finishes suffered. Adem Bona was useful on the glass early, then forced a runner that got blocked and took an early-clock corner three. The Sixers need a more reliable big man behind Embiid.
Philadelphia also made 15 of 23 free throws, which mattered in the closing minutes.
Sixers Host the Bulls on Monday
The record is 6-1 with a three-game winning streak. The Sixers host the Chicago Bulls on Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Two stars were out and the Sixers still got the win.
