How the Sixers-Bulls game was decided

Chicago hung around for most of the night. The 76ers led by five at halftime and by 11 entering the fourth. A 15-2 run in the third quarter had pushed the lead to 83-66, and it reached 22 in the fourth.

Tyrese Maxey led the way with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting, 11 assists, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Fifteen of those points came in the fourth quarter. His three-pointer with about six and a half minutes left put the Sixers up by double digits for good.

Jaylen Brown bounced back from a 6-of-15 night in Charlotte with 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting, 11 rebounds and five assists. He missed Friday’s win over the Knicks with left knee tendinopathy, and he looked mobile. Two of his fourth-quarter threes forced Chicago timeouts.

VJ Edgecombe started 7-of-7 from the floor and finished with a season-high 21 points. Eleven of them came in the first quarter, mostly on dunks. The Sixers scored 29 fast-break points, and one of Edgecombe’s slams came off a bounce pass from LeBron James, who had 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

All five starters scored at least 15. The Sixers shot 53 percent and had 36 assists.

Beating a 1-6 team by 19 is the assignment. The Sixers handled it.

Embiid sits the fourth, and the bench struggles

Joel Embiid was questionable with right foot plantar fascia injury management and played. He scored 15 points with eight rebounds in 25 minutes and did not play in the fourth quarter.

The bench is where the Sixers Bulls game got uncomfortable. Philadelphia’s 10-point first-quarter lead disappeared once Nick Nurse went to his reserves. Adem Bona committed five fouls in 14 minutes, and Dean Wade started the fourth quarter at center. Anfernee Simons went 2-of-11 and scored six points.

Caleb Wilson led Chicago with 24 points and seven rebounds. The Bulls shot 27 percent from three.

What comes next after the Sixers win

The Sixers now play three straight on the road. They visit Detroit on Wednesday, where the Pistons handed them their only loss on Oct. 25. Friday is at Cleveland, which will be James’ return to his former home. The trip ends Sunday with a Sixers Bulls rematch in Chicago.
