Flyers Tony Escargot Fire Tocchet Plane Fundraiser

Flyers Update: Tony Escargot’s “Fire Tocchet” fundraiser blows past $6,000

When fans are reaching into their own pockets to tell you to fire your coach, you’ve got a problem. That’s where the Flyers are right now. They’re 4-10-4, sitting 30th in the NHL, and the fan base has officially run out of patience with Rick Tocchet.

Honestly, who could blame them?

This team is exactly who we thought it was

For a minute there in late October, it looked like the Flyers might be turning a corner. They won three straight, and people started to talk themselves into it.

Then reality came back.

Look at the run this team has been on: nine straight losses, then three wins, three losses, one win and two more losses. That’s a team with no identity, making the same mistakes night after night while the coach behind the bench can’t seem to fix any of them.

It started with a 7-0 beatdown at the hands of the Penguins in the home opener, the worst possible way to open a season and it got worse on Thursday, when the Flyers choked away a game against the Rangers. They’re now 0-4-3 against their own division.

Tocchet was brought here to build a tough, structured team that competes every night. 18 games in, this team isn’t tough, it isn’t structured and it doesn’t show up against the teams it most needs to beat so that’s obviously on the coach.

Tony Escargot to the rescue

Enter Tony Escargot.

If you’ve spent any time on social media, you know the name. He’s the guy who went viral for getting cannoli sent to people’s houses for free through food delivery apps. Now he’s taking on a bigger mission.

On Friday, Tony Escargot launched a fundraiser to fly a “Fire Rick Tocchet” banner over Xfinity Mobile Arena when the Flyers host the Canucks on November 27. That’s Tocchet’s old team, by the way, which makes the timing even better.

The goal was $2,000. It was hit in under an hour. So he raised the goal to $4,000 to add a “Fire Tocchet” billboard on I-95. Flyers fans blew through that too, and they haven’t stopped. The fundraiser is now at $6,190.

The plane is officially booked for November 27, and Tony says he’ll have an update on the billboard early this week. Everything raised past the $4,000 goal is going to Snider Hockey and CHOP, which so far comes to $2,190 for Philly kids.

Tony Escargot is a hero

Fans voicing their frustration and raising money for sick kids and youth hockey at the same time? That’s about as Philly as it gets. Tony Escargot is doing the Lord’s work.

The money should scare the Flyers

The banner itself isn’t what should worry the front office. It’s how fast the money showed up, and how much of it there is.

This wasn’t one angry guy with a credit card. It was a whole lot of Flyers fans who decided more than $6,000 of their hard-earned money was better spent telling ownership to fire the coach than on tickets, beer or the new Hometown Remix jerseys.

That’s a message no organization can ignore. Every dollar going to a plane or a billboard is a dollar that isn’t going to the Flyers.
