The Other Phillies Player Who Needs A New Deal

All the Phillies talk this year has been around the #SignJT movement as his contract comes to an end this season. Although making sure Realmuto is in Philadelphia long-term, there is another Phillie the team can also not afford to lose.
Last offseason the Phillies took a chance and signed shortstop Didi Gregorius to a one year “prove it” deal. Didi was coming off injury and nobody knew what he would be like. That being said, the Phillies took a gamble on him and it has paid off greatly.
Throughout the course of this year Didi has been a key piece for the Phillies. This season he is slashing .289/.344/.849, has hit 10 home runs, and driven in 40 runs.
Didi’s strong play has found him at the top of team leaders in multiple categories:
- 1st in AVG
- 1st in RBI
- 1st in Hits
- 3rd in Home runs
- 4th in OPS
- 5th in OBP
Didi has been worth every penny the team spent on him, and he should be here for the future. Which is why his contract talks need to be close to or equal importance of J.T. Realmuto’s.
The addition of Didi has been a huge boost the Phillies’ lineup. He has added a lot of pop to the middle of the order, and makes the lineup look a lot deeper.
Keeping Didi here long-term would create a log jam in the infield, but that is a good problem to have. With the DH making its way to the NL it makes it a lot easier to handle this kind of situation.
Matt Klentak has had his fair share of not so good moves in his time as GM, but signing Didi has been one of his best. After seeing how impactful Didi has been for the Phillies, there is no reason why the team should not sign him to a new deal this offseason.

[…] Last offseason Didi Gregorius was hoping for a return to the Yankees. That obviously didn’t happen. The Yankees were focused on bringing superstar pitcher Gerrit Cole to the big apple instead.
