What should the Phillies do with Jean Segura?

The Phillies enter yet another offseason with uncertainty surrounding Jean Segura. Commonly referred to as Jimmy Cigs, thanks to some hilarious closed captioning from NBC Sports, (Shout Out NE Degenerates). Segura was forced to move around this year with the additions of Didi Gregorius and Alec Bohm.
It’s safe to say that 3rd base is out of the question for Segura moving forward given the fact that Alec Bohm proved to be a certified stud at 3rd base this past season. We all hope that Didi Gregorius will be re-signed in free agency. But who knows what’s happening inside the Phillies front office. (John Middleton surely doesn’t.)
The Phillies can definitely afford to re-sign Gregorius. They should. He was on a prove-it contract and made it clear this year he is worth the money.
The Phillies still owe Jean Segura $30 million over the next two seasons, which will make it tough to trade him. If Didi Gregorius isn’t back in Philadelphia next season, then Segura will most likely find himself at shortstop for the Phillies.
Segura’s defense has been on the decline for the Phillies. At the plate, he’s been declining as well. His batting average has dipped the last two seasons, from .304 to .280 to .266 and he’s been striking out more. He did however, provide more than a few clutch hits for the Phillies, batting .298 with a .920 OPS with RISP, and hit 7 home runs and 25 RBIs in the corona shortened season.
Scott Kingery will likely get another shot at 2nd base for the Phillies. If the Phillies do re-sign Didi Gregorius, it wouldn’t be crazy to consider Kingery in centerfield and Segura at 2nd base to start the 2021 season.
Personally, the nickname alone is worth keeping Segura around. The Phillies should try to trade him but his contract might make that difficult. Hopefully Segura can turn it around and find himself contributing for the Phillies come 2021.
