Flyers re-sign Justin Braun

Just minutes after news broke that defenseman Matt Niskanen is retiring, the Philadelphia Flyers have re-signed Justin Braun to a two-year contract extension. The contract is worth $1.8AAV.
Trading for Braun last offseason the Flyers needed a veteran on the blue line along with Matt Niskanen to develop and mentor the kids. In his first year with the Flyers he recorded 3G-16A-19P. Not really known for his offensive game, Braun brought a steady, stay at home defensive game to the backend. He has a really active stick and is always in someones face.
For this value ($1.8AAV) at two years, it’s not a bad bargain. He’s a fine bottom pair defenseman for the Flyers and a great locker room presence. He helped solidify the bottom pair and PK this year, a key part in the PK’s turnaround. Just hope the Flyers don’t view him is a viable replacement for Niskanen, that’s where they’ll get in trouble.
Welcome back, Brauner!
With this signing the Flyers have about $8.5 million in cap space left. Still have RFA’s Nolan Patrick & Phil Myers to sign. Free Agency begins Friday with the draft on Tuesday.
Gear up Philadelphia, things just got interesting.
