Day 1 of on-ice Training Camp underway with youngsters impressing for Flyers

Yesterday was technically the first day of Training Camp, consisting of all the off-ice stuff like physicals and new numbers. I’m sure there was some kind of team meeting with AV addressing the boys as well. Just a day for everyone to get in and get comfortable and ready for the real start of camp. Today was that first official day back on the ice for the Flyers and boy was it nice to see hockey flooding my timeline in the morning again. I’ve missed it. Two groups practiced today, Group A and Group B.
Group A: Konecny, Raffl, Hayes, Patrick, Lindblom, Giroux, Frost, Allison, Twarynski, Bunnaman, Farabee, Voracek, Myers, Sanheim, Hagg, Provorov, Gostisbehere, Gustafsson, Friedman, Braun, Hart and Elliott.
Yes, you’re reading that right. Nolan Patrick was out there today, indicating that Patrick has passed his physical and is eyeing that 3C spot. Here’s Patrick during today’s scrimmage.
From reports from writers who are able to be there, Patrick looks like one of the better players in these scrimmages, which is a great sign for Patrick. It’s only Day 1 of camp so we want to hold off on the parade on Broad, but it’s a good start on the road of returning for Patrick. Another Flyers prospect who is going for that 3C spot is Morgan Frost. He has also reportedly looked good in Day 1.
One of the main knocks on Frost is that he needs to put on muscle and get stronger on/off the puck. At least on Day 1 of camp he’s look much improved in that area. If he can continue looking good in camp and show he’s gotten stronger on/off the puck, I don’t see how he’s not in the starting lineup vs Penguins. He’s one of the most skilled players on the team.
Group B (ran by AHL head coach Scott Gordon on opposite rink): Andreoff, Couturier, Laughton, JVR, Sandin, Foerster, Morin, Wisdom, NAK, Willman, Bigras, Wotherspoon, Prosser, Pouliot, Zamula, Wylie, Sandstrom, Lyon and Ross.
Nice to see 2020 23rd overall pick Tyson Foerster in camp, playing alongside veteran guys like Couturier and JVR. Foerster has a very slim chance of making this roster but it’s still nice to see him getting reps with those guys, it can’t hurt.
Max Willman kicked the first scrimmage of the camp off with a nice goal coming down the wing all alone.
Group A (orange) won the game 2-1 with goals from Giroux and TK. After the scrimmage AV had the boys do a little shootout practice, it’s always fun watching Giroux go in 1 on 1.
Some really exciting stuff on Day 1.
We got a Provorov – Braun pairing today and I don’t know how much you should look into that, I think? I keep saying I’m not going to overreact on the first day of camp with good things like Frost looking good and Patrick having a good scrimmage, so I’m keeping the same energy with this, for now. Could see something completely different most likely, in the next practice.
*Side Notes*
After switching from defense to left wing, Sam Morin participated in his first training camp as a forward today. Morin scored on a rebound goal inclose. 50 goal season incoming?
Tanner Laczynski was somebody who I was really looking forward to watching come in here and make a case for a bottom six role. It could still happen in the future, just not right now. Laczynski is out recovering from core muscle surgery. He was on the ice today before the start of practice.
