Flyers: Team White defeats Team Orange 4-2 in Intrasquad Scrimmage

Tonight the Flyers battled each other in an intrasquad scrimmage game. This was the only bit of “preseason” action the team is going to have going into Wednesdays season opener. The rosters for Team Orange and Team Black were:

First Period

Out of the gate the first line that popped was the Giroux – Hayes – Farabee line. This line looked unstoppable to start this game, cycling the puck and doing a tic-tac-toe for a beautiful first goal.

They didn’t stop there as Farabee would go along the boards behind the net, dish a behind the back back-hand pass to Hayes who jams it home.

Team White really found their footing towards the end of the period, drawing a penalty and almost potting a goal. Elliott made a crazy save on Frost on the feed from Patrick.

Second Period

The second period is where Team White really took control. They got within one once Aube-Kubel sniped one on Elliott from the right faceoff dot.

Today was the first time we watched Nolan Patrick play hockey in a Flyers uniform since the Hakstol/Gordon era. Patrick tied the game at 2 on a beautiful play from Voracek, who cut through the defense and gave it to Willman who then set up Patrick for the tap in. Electric.

Third Period

Carter Hart took over the game from here on out, stopping every shot even when getting shelled on the powerplay. At the 5 minute mark, the game went to 3v3 and Team White daggered the game. Laughton and JVR both scored beautiful breakaway goals to put Team Orange away 4-2.

Both teams participated in a shootout at the end of the game and it was a nail-biter. Elliott and Hart couldn’t be beaten until Raffl ended the shootout in the eighth round with a slapper on Elliott.

Quick Thoughts

– Giroux – Hayes – Farabee line is pure electricity and I need to watch them more.

– Sanheim and Myers both looked good in this scrimmage, especially Myers who was dominant at times.

– Carter Hart and Brian Elliott both had great games and I expected nothing less.

– Nolan Patrick looked much better than I thought he would at this point in his return.

– Willman kind of stood out this game and you could tell he was playing his heart out.

– I was pleased with the powerplay work we saw in this game, hope those personnel changes remain.

On to Pittsburgh.
