Is Josh Mcdaniels The Right Fit For The Eagles?

Duce Staley, Todd Bowles, Josh Mcdaniels, Joe Brady, Jerod Mayo and Nick Sirianni. Those are all the potential candidates the Eagles have interviewed so far for the head coaching position. Obviously, many Eagles are hoping the Eagles eventually get an interview with Eric Bieniemy; who has played a big part in the Kansas City Chiefs historically great offense.
Josh Mcdaniels appears to be the favorite as of right now.
Regardless of how you feel about Mcdaniels, you can’t ignore the fact that he has an 11-17 record as a head coach. Many know him for his work as the Patriots offensive coordinator. But Mcdaniels was the Denver Broncos head coach from 2009-2010. To be fair, his quarterbacks were Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow. Mcdaniels did get the most out of Kyle Orton though. In two seasons under Mcdaniels, Orton threw 41 touchdowns to 21 interceptions, while completing 60.4% of his passes.
This isn’t all about bashing Josh Mcdaniels. I’m sure he brings plenty of good qualities to a franchise. But the issue here is that there seems to be a lot better candidates available. The Eagles offense has been the biggest issue over the last couple seasons. So whichever candidate they go with; they have to believe they will fix this offense and help repair Carson Wentz.
Josh Mcdaniels certainly has his appeal. But he just doesn’t compare to guys like Joe Brady, Eric Bieniemy, or even Lincoln Riley for example. All those guys are very innovative and modern offensive coaches. That is the trend and direction the NFL is going in.
The Eagles offense ranked 24th in the NFL this past season. That didn’t sit well with Jeffery Lurie. That is why Lurie decided to part ways with Doug Pederson. So when we sit here debating candidates, we have to consider which candidate can truly fix this offense and lead a team. While Mcdaniels may not seem like the first guy on many people’s list, that doesn’t mean he can’t be the one the Eagles truly believe in. Of course many remember the underwhelming feeling when the Eagles hired Doug Pederson back in 2016. Little did they know he would be the first coach in history to lead the Eagles to a Super bowl victory.
