Did Pat McAfee and Mike Lombardi just hint at the next DC for the Eagles?
Could the Eagles have found their Jim Schwartz replacement? Mike Lombardi joined the Pat McAfee show yesterday and was interrupted during their conversation when he received a text message. When questioned what it was regarding, Mike said “I think I might know who the Eagles’ new defensive coordinator is but I’m not allowed to say.” Discussing it further, Lombardi also stated that it’s a “Colt thing too. It involves the Colts.”
After the commercial break, McAfee went back to the topic. McAfee stated “We know who you’re talking about”. Lombardi insisted that he can not “confirm or deny” anything. McAfee asked Lombardi if his last name is “similar to the last name of a man that had one of the greatest pump fakes in the history of NFL football”. It took Lombardi a minute until he realized McAfee was talking about Rich Gannon. Once he made the connection, he smirked and reiterated that he’s not saying anything else about the topic.
Watch the full exchange below:
The coach McAfee was referring to would be Indianapolis Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon. Gannon has been with the Colts since 2018. Before arriving in Indianapolis, Gannon coached in Minnesota as an assistant defensive backs coach.
Gannon’s defensive backs group was above average during his three years with the Colts, always ranking top ten in interceptions. Several people have had Gannon rumored to be a defensive coordinator target for the Eagles and across the league. Jonathan is a leading candidate for the Falcons DC job and is set to interview with the Los Angeles Chargers soon.
If this rumor turns out to be accurate, it would be a fantastic get for the Eagles—several new coaches across the league have shown significant interest in Gannon and would make sense given the fact that the Eagles’ new head coach is former Colts’ Offensive Coordinator Nick Sirianni.
