Doc Rivers nominated as head coach to third NBA All-Star Game

Following tonight’s win over the Chicago Bulls, Doc Rivers has clinched the Eastern Conference’s head coach slot for the 2021 NBA All-Star Game. Doc will be coaching Team Durant, who is the Eastern Conference’s captain. This will be Rivers’ third selection in his over 20 year coaching career. The coaches are decided by whoever is first place in their respective conference two weeks before the game. The Sixers sit in first place in the East with a record of 20-10.
Doc previously was the Eastern Conference coach in both 2008 and 2011 during his time with the Boston Celtics. Billy Cunningham and Larry Brown are the only other 76ers coaches to ever be selected. Cunningham was nominated four times during the 70s and 80s and Brown most recently in 2001.
Quin Snyder will be coaching opposite Rivers for Team LeBron. Only Joel Embiid has been named an All-Star for the Sixers, with the reserves yet to be announced. Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris will be likely candidates for the remaining seven slots. The reserve nominations will take place on Tuesday night on TNT NBA Tip-Off at 7 PM. The All-Star Game will occur on March 7th, with all the events taking place on the same night.
