NHL to feature advertisements on jerseys starting in 2022

Corporate greed continues to consume the sports world as the NHL announced today that teams could place advertisements on their uniforms starting in the 2022/2023 season. Last season the Flyers announced that Tata Consultancy Services would be their helmet sponsors. Sponsors have been on practice uniforms throughout the NHL for the previous few years.
There has been a lot of skepticism regarding what the future may hold for sponsors in professional sports. The addition to game uniforms was first seen in the US by the NBA back in 2017. The NHL is just the second major league outside of soccer to allow jersey advertisements with the MLB and NFL not making any changes just yet.
There is no word yet on who Philadelphia will tap as their next uniform sponsor, but it wouldn’t be a shock if it ends up being Comcast since they own the Flyers. StubHub formerly sponsored the 76ers, but it looks like that will be changing ahead of the 2021/2022 NBA season. Luckily for hockey fans, they will get one more season before the change occurs. Let’s hope it doesn’t get out of hand.
