“DEFENSE, DEFENSE!” The call from Gus Johnson still ringing in the heads of all Penn State fans after a timely 4th and goal interception from Jaquan Brisker all but sealed the first road win against an AP Top-15 team in James Franklin’s tenure as head coach. Previously, Franklin had been 0-12 in such games, but despite being on the field for nearly 43 minutes, Penn State’s defense found a way to will the team to victory.

The highly anticipated, new look offense piloted by new OC Mike Yurcich would have been better off staying in the locker room during the 1st half….compiling a whopping 43 yards and 1 first down. However, the big plays seemed to come in bunches in the final 30 minutes of action, with 3 plays of 40+ yards (compared to 6 total in all of 2020).

Now, Penn State turns their attention to the defending MAC champion Ball State Cardinals as they travel to Beaver Stadium for a 3:30 PM local time kickoff. The game is expected to be played in front of 103K plus, a first for the Nittany Lions in nearly 2 years.

With a primetime White Out looming in the background versus Auburn, Franklin was asked in his weekly presser about his stance on “trap games”. “Trap games, yeah, I believe in teams playing inconsistent because they either look forward, look back, get caught up in the praise, get caught up in the criticism, don’t have the correct amount of respect for the opponent or the process.”
