Preseason Game 3 Preview: Captials @ Flyers

The Flyers are 0-1-1 so far into their preseason, losing their last game to Boston, 4-2. Tonight marks the 3rd of six preseason games and will feature what most expect to be their opening line-up on October 15th vs Vancouver. No Ovechkin, Backstrom, Oshie, Wilson or Orlov tonight for the Capitals, so it’ll be fun to see what this lineup can do.
Flyers’ Projected Lines
Giroux – Couturier – Konecny
Giroux’s line had some spurts in the first preseason game where they had some offensive zone pressure, but nothing happened in terms of scoring. AV recently said in one of his media pressers that Konecny is one of the Flyers’ most conditioned players in camp and expects big things from him this year, so I’m looking for this line to be very involved tonight and this season.
JVR – Frost – Farabee
This line went didn’t do a lot on 5v5 against Boston, going up Bergeron’s line, they struggled to get things going. The Flyers scored two goal though, both coming on the power play, where all three of these players touched the puck. Frost admitted some timidness with his injury crept back into his mind a little Thursday, but reiterates he feels strong, healthy and ready to show what he can do in tonights game.
Frost is getting on the score sheet tonight.
Lindblom – Brassard – Atkinson
Oskar Lindblom looks like he’s starting to feel and play like he was before he got sick. I really enjoyed watching Brassard on Tuesday night vs the Islanders, thought he was assertive and decisive with the puck. Have really enjoyed watching this line in camp and think Atkinson, a sniper, is in a good spot balance the lines.
Laughton – Thompson – Aube-Kubel
Another line that’s been fun to watch in camp, the Laughton line had some good and bad shifts Thursday, along with the rest of the lines. NAK was everywhere against Boston, if he can have a bounce back season, that 4th line could be really fun.
Provorov – Ellis
The new defensive pairings is probably what I’m most excited to get a chance to watch tonight. I thought this pair looked good against the Islanders, Ellis is so smooth and really gives Provorov the confidence to take chances. It was just a preseason game, but I saw Provorov step up and try and be creative countless times Tuesday, really nice to see again. Lets see how Game 2 goes for this pair.
Sanheim – Ristolainen
Ristolainen wasted no time introducing himself to Boston on Thursday night, laying the body numerous times throughout the contest. I’m really excited to get another look at this pair, the more time and experience they get with each other, along with Provorov and Ellis, the better.
Yandle – Braun
Yandle made a couple of sweet saucer passes the other night that we’re just so smooth. This pair has had a quietly good camp and first game together. I thought Braun looked really good Tuesday, so we’ll see what this 3rd pairing has in store for us tonight.
Martin Jones
Jones, after a shaky first start with the Flyers, is set to get the full game tonight vs Washington. Personally, I think the only goal you can truly look at Jones and be like “come on man”, was the 3rd goal. But even then, it was confirmed by Jones after the game that the puck went off Linus Sandin’s stick. Very interested to see how Jones bounces back with the full team in-front of him.
Quick Hits
- Look for Morgan Frost to a lot more assertive tonight, knows he needs to do more and wants the puck on his stick.
- Preseason games obviously don’t mean scratch, but you’d like to see the Flyers, with their full lineup, come away with a win here.
- I need Ristolainen to send someone flying tonight
- Lindblom is potting one tonight
- Go Flyers
