Could Bryce Harper Help the Phillies Land Their Much Needed Star Infielder?

Free agency will soon be upon us, once the worst World Series in the history of baseball is complete. There are many big names out there for the Phillies to acquire, but the team and Dave Dombrowski also have some decisions to make regarding their current roster. One name that has been on the radar since last free agency, officially signed with Scott Boras this morning. Could Bryce Harper recruit Marcus Semien to come to Philadelphia?

Marcus Semien was on the Phillies’ radar last year but ultimately ended up signing with the Toronto Blue Jays instead. After signing a 1 year deal with the Jays worth 18 million dollars, Semien is now set to hit free agency for the second year in a row. Nobody really knows the path that the Blue Jays want to go in with Semien, and it seems like there is a good chance that he could take his talents elsewhere.

Bryce Harper is also represented by Scott Boras, which makes this interesting. Bryce Harper has been known for trying to recruit free agents to come here. His most known occasion was with his catcher, as Bryce was constantly recruiting JT back to Philadelphia during his free agent stint. With the Phillies interested in Semien in the past, their need for a middle infielder, and the Boras connection with Bryce Harper, this is not off the table by any means.

Semien had a great year this past season with the Blue Jays. He slashed a line of .265/.334/.538, with an OPS of .873. Semien tallied 45 home runs as well, knocking in 102 RBIs on 173 hits in 652 at-bats last season. Semien played mostly second base with the Jays with Bo Bichette at shortstop, but is still an above-average shortstop and could make the switch back with no problems. With Didi Gregorius regressing and being owed a lot of money (around 14 million), Semien would be an immediate upgrade over Didi if the Phillies chose to go in that direction.

Jon Morosi said it perfectly above. Everything you want in a teammate, Semien has. He’s one of the most clutch players in the MLB, he’s a great teammate, and he’s just overall an all-around great talent. With Semien hiring the Scott Boras Corporation to represent him, Bryce Harper has some recruiting to do. The signs are there, Dave Dombrowski just needs to go out and get him.

The Phillies need a shortstop. Marcus Semien needs a new home. Make it happen. Some big dates are coming up for the Phillies, including the start of free agency, MLB Awards being announced, and more. Semien now has a new agent, one of the best in the game. He’s a star infielder, and that’s one of the things on the top of the Phillies list this offseason.

Ring it. Come home, Marcus.
