76ers Player of the Week – Matisse Thybulle

It is Monday, so while many of you are rolling into work following a rough Halloweekend hangover, the 76ers enter their third full week of basketball. A new week means a new Sixer will receive the illustrious honor that I bestow upon them, but this was a difficult decision for me to make. It seems almost disrespectful to give Joel Embiid this honor, not because he is playing poorly, but I would assume that he ends up having multiple collections of better stretches for us to gawk at down the road. Tobias Harris also had a really solid week, but it was essentially what we expected of him up to this point.
That being said, the Sixer of the Week for week two goes to Philadelphia’s Golden Son:
Matisse Thybulle
This week, the honor of being Sixer of the week goes to Matisse Thybulle. His game against the Hawks on Saturday night was pure joy to watch. In just 23 minutes, he snatched four steals and three blocks, all while scoring a season high 11 points. Flying all over the court, dominating defensively and also scoring in a variety of ways, that is the Matisse Thybulle this team needs going forward. Just take two minutes to watch these highlights:
Over the last three games, Thybulle has collected eight steals and five blocks while averaging what would be exponentially higher than his career average, 7.3 points per game. We all know how Thybulle can look offensively at times, but it seems like he is breaking through into new ways of attacking. Fast break dunks will most likely be the main source of Thybulle’s scoring forever, but specifically in the game against Atlanta he proved that he has the ability to drive, cut, and seek out offensive opportunities all over the floor.
Thybulle is one of the few genuine defensive game changers in the league today. He causes havoc on the court from the second he steps on to the second he steps off. Growing as an offensive player, will allow him to see the floor more often and create more opportunities for himself. Last week was a great foundation for Thybulle and the Sixers to build on, and as this season progresses I expect to see that same progression from Matisse.
The Philadelphia 76ers are back in action tonight against the Portland Trailblazers in South Philadelphia.
