MACtion Betting Guide: All Hail the RedHawks?

Finally, we have arrived. Today is the first day of college football on Tuesdays this season. The NCAA Mid-American Conference Football, better known to the loyalists as the MAC returns to save us on Tuesdays and Wednesday nights. There are no more days off. We have football every single night of the week.
The NCAA and NFL machine has taken full control of our lives. Just sit back and let it happen. MACtion returns tonight with three games happening tonight. The first game kicking off is Ball State at Akron. Then 30 minutes later, we have Miami OH at Ohio and Eastern Michigan at Toledo.
Ball State at Akron
TEAM | SPREAD | MONEYLINE | TOTAL |
Ball State | -20 (-109) | -1250 | O 57.5 (-113) |
Akron | +20 (-112) | +700 | U 57.5 (-108) |
Ball State is in an incredible five-way tie for second place in the MAC West with a 2-2 record. They will enter tonight as heavy favorites against the Zips. Akron is a pretty miserable football program. For our Philadelphia demographic, just think Temple Football. They’re pretty much the same. Pathetic and miserable.
The Zips passing offense has been described as “nonexistent” by other websites (lol) and their defense is “the worst unit in football”. They rank 120th or worse in every major defensive category. Amazing. As I’m writing this, all of the sudden I absolutely love the Zips.
As for Ball State, they are the definition of a mediocre football team. That’s what MACtion is all about. Really the only catch here is that Ball State has a suspect passing attack. They can definitely run the ball and Akron’s defensive metrics makes me think that even I could run on them.
If Ball State grounds and pounds all night, it might be tough to hit a hefty 57.5 over. Then again, Akron Zips is a glorified high school team and maybe that’s even too much of a compliment. Still, I think it’s going to be tough to completely run up the score on a cold, cloudy night in Akron, Ohio.
Parx Sportsbook Prediction: Ball State -20 and the Under 57.5
Miami (OH) at Ohio
TEAM | SPREAD | MONEYLINE | TOTAL |
Miami (OH) | -7.5 (-109) | -315 | O 53.5 (-109) |
Ohio | +7.5 (-112) | +230 | U 53.5 (-112) |
Great name and honestly, there’s no way I could ever get behind a school that is constantly playing second Fiddle to Miami, Florida. Miami (OH) needs to get it together and drop the (OH) completely. Until then, I will root against them every single week. I would like to apologize for the title of this article. “ALL HAIL THE REDHAWKS” is just fun to say out loud. I’m not changing it but I’ll add a question mark just because this is a sponsored post from Parx Sportsbook.
Miami is currently tied with Kent State for first place in the MAC East with a 3-1 record in conference play. Just last week, RedHawks quarterback Brett Gabbert returned to the lineup against Ball State. The offense has definitely struggled in the ground and passing attack but I’m going to say that’s because they are missing their starting quarterback through the early goings of the season.
Brett Gabbert looks strong but honestly, Miami OH and the RedHawks, although the name is awesome to say and in the title of the article, I just can’t do it, even with a defense currently ranked 15th in College Football.
In steps the home underdogs. Kurtis Rourke can sling it. Don’t sleep on the Bobcats! Even with such a standard football name and everything is BEGGING me to take the RedHawks on paper. I just can’t do it. Bobcats. Bobcats. Bobcats. 7.5 point underdogs at home on the first night of MACtion? God bless you Parx. This is where we win.
Parx Sportsbook Prediction: BOBCATS +230 OUTRIGHT.
Eastern Michigan at Toledo
TEAM | SPREAD | MONEYLINE | TOTAL |
Eastern Michigan | +9 (-110) | +260 | O 54 (-110) |
Toledo | -9 (-110) | -360 | U 54 (-110) |
The Screaming Eagles of Eastern Michigan (actually just the Eagles) just beat the crap out of Bowling Green in a 31 point route two weeks ago. They were slow out of the gate but then scored 24 second quarter points to blow the gates off BG. Cincinnati transfer Benny Bryant from Eastern Michigan was on point and is leading a scary Eagles passing game.
Here’s the problem. Eastern Michigan is terrible on defense, especially through the air. The pass rush, however is pretty is decent which should help against a Toledo offense that rushes 55% of its offensive plays.
The Rockets offense struggles. They are a defensive minded team which is actually great against the Eagles offense who can put up points at a high rate. At the end of the day, I love Toledo at home and their defense slowing down Eastern Michigan to win this game rather easily.
Parx Sportsbook Prediction: Toledo -9 (-110)
MACtion Parlay
- Ball State -20.5 (-108)
- Toledo -9 (-110)
- Ohio ML (+210)
- Odds: +1043

Full disclosure, I only watch MAC football when it’s on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and I’m a subpar gambler but this is what I’m rolling with tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll dive into even more MACtion coming our way with Central Michigan vs Western Michigan and Northern Illinois at Kent State.

[…] Ball State won but failed to cover the -20.5 spread and Eastern Michigan blew the doors off Toledo. Out of four bets I gave you night one, two of them hit. Ball State Under and Ohio beating Miami (OH) as 7.5 point underdogs at home (money line +230). […]
