Phillies Cutch Herrera

The Phillies have declined options on two of their outfielders

The Philadelphia Phillies announced today that they have declined the club options of both Andrew McCutchen and Odúbel Herrera for the 2022 season. Nine players were set to hit arbitration this winter for the Philadelphia Phillies. We covered that here. Honestly, only three players really matter on that list. It was expected for the Phillies to part ways with both Cutch and Herrera after this year.

As for Herrera, the controversial centerfielder didn’t even make the club out of Spring Training but was called up after pretty much every other option failed the Phillies early on in the season. Herrera hit .260 with 13 home runs and a .726 in 124 games with the Phillies. Herrera had a hefty $11.5 million option for the 2022 season. The Phillies do still have control over Herrera, who landed himself on the arbitration eligible list this winter. It’s almost guaranteed that the Phillies will non-tender Herrera come arbitration time and let him be a free agent.

Cutch had a pretty decent year last season with the Phillies, hitting 27 home runs and finishing with a .778 in 144 games. It was McCutchen’s third season with the Phillies and had a $15 million team option coming up in 2022 and a $3 million buyout. At 34 years old, it makes sense that the Phillies would decline the offer. Absolutely love Cutch, but our time has come to an end. Cheers brother.
