Could the Phillies Target this Star Outfielder in Free Agency?

The offseason is underway for the Phillies, just days after the Atlanta Braves took home their first World Series Championship in 26 years. The team declined club options for Odubel Herrera and Andrew McCutchen yesterday, making them free agents. With two outfielders not coming back, there are going to be some holes to fill out in the grass. They have not made the playoffs in a decade and there’s a drive into deep left field by Nick Castellanos and that’ll be a home run to make the ball game 4-0 Reds.
We talk about the Phillies targeting a star infielder all the time, but could they potentially eye up…Nick Castellanos? The 29 year old outfielder opted out of his contract with the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. He had $34 million and two years to go but will now be a free agent heading into the 2022 season.
Nick Castellanos is coming off one of the best seasons of his career. He was a first-time NL all-star, where he hit .309/.362/.577, with 34 HRs and 100 RBIs on the season. He tacked on 164 hits and 3 stolen bases as well, being the clutch player that the Reds needed all season. Castellanos is a great fielder as well, where he can just about play all over the outfield if needed. He played right field for the Reds this season, but would most likely move over to left in he came to Philly.
The Phillies need a solid outfielder alongside Bryce Harper. They won’t be bringing back Herrera or McCutchen, Vierling is good, but I need to see more before I can count on him to play all year. Mickey Moniak was too inconsistent last year, not really proving to us that he can play every day. Castellanos is a mad-man, and you might remember him for this hilarious clip, where he interrupted a serious apology with an absolute tank-shot to left field “to make it a 4-0 ballgame”.
Nick Castellanos will join big hitters such as Freddie Freeman, Trevor Story, Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, and more on one of the biggest free agent markets in recent memory. As we all know, it always seems like the Phillies are petrified to go over the luxury tax, but if it takes going over to get Harper another star outfielder and big bat beside him, you do it 100 times out of 100. Just imagine Castellanos/Harper/Hoskins/JT hitting 2-5 for this team.

With free agency kicking off, and players being able to finally sign with teams soon, the Phillies are going to have some decisions to make. Whether that would be go after a star shortstop, pitcher, outfielder, whatever, they need to do something to get this team back where we know they can be. 10 years without playoff baseball is way too long, and if they pull the right strings this offseason, they could end that drought.
