New York Post predicts Phillies landing 2 free agents on the Top 40 List

The Phillies are in the midst of their offseason, where decisions are being made about current players on last year’s roster. The team outrighted six players on Saturday, including Ronald Torreyes, Andrew Knapp, JD Hammer, and more. Yesterday, Ken Davidoff of the New York Post predicted each landing spot of the Top 40 Free Agents around the league, and the Phillies name is on there twice.
FA #24: Michael Conforto
Michael Conforto is an outfielder for the New York Mets, who is entering the 8th year of his career. Conforto hit .232/.344/.385 last season, with 14 HRs and 55 RBIs, adding up to a .729 OPS. Conforto is a great fielder and can cover ground in the outfield very well. Everyone knows the Phillies need an outfielder, specifically a left fielder. Conforto would also be re-joining his old hitting coach Kevin Long, who the Phillies signed a few weeks ago onto their staff.
Davidoff is predicting Conforto to land with the Phillies on a six-year, $140 million deal. At first glance, 23.3 mil a year seems like a lot for Conforto, and I don’t know if the Phillies will go in this direction. I don’t think they are necessarily scared to throw money at players anymore, I just think that they want to throw their money at the right players. However, Conforto still needs to deny his 1/18.4 million dollar qualifying offer from New York. If he does that, then he’s free to go and sign elsewhere.
Final Prediction: The Phillies will NOT sign Michael Conforto
FA #29: Kenley Jansen
Kenley Jansen intrigues me. He’s set to hit free agency, and the Phillies need a defined closer. Jansen was 4-4 last season with a 2.22 ERA, striking out 86 batters in 69.0 innings. He’s an all-time 2.37 ERA pitcher, with 1000+ strikeouts in 12 MLB seasons.
Ian Kennedy was not consistent this season, and I don’t really want any parts of him next season, especially if the Phillies are serious about contending for a title. Jansen is a great closer, and Davidoff is predicting a 3 year, $40 million deal (13.3 per year). If the Phils can pull that off, count me in. But does the team want to commit their closer role to a 34-year-old?
Final Prediction: The Phillies WILL sign Kenley Jansen

This offseason is going to be a good one. Tons of big names are out there in free agency, including Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Trevor Story, Nick Castellanos, and many more. The Phils need to have the best offseason they’ve ever had if they want a shot at the playoffs this upcoming season.
