DeVonta Smith: I’ll Lock Slay Up

DeVonta Smith spoke with the media on a wide range of topics today. Earlier, Slay commented on the fact that he wanted to go in and take reps at wide receiver, so the question was then given to Smith regarding Slay’s comments and if he could flip roles and play cornerback on Slay if that happened. Smith is coming off his best game ever in the NFL and confidently responded that he would “lock Slay up” and honestly, I couldn’t agree more.
First and foremost, can Slay even defend DeVonta Smith? Have you seen Smitty’s footwork? He’s literally always open. Unfortunately, our quarterback struggles to throw the ball in general and often can’t get Smitty the ball during the games. Regardless, last Sunday when it mattered most, Hurts drove the Eagles down the field and found Devonta Smith for a game-tying touchdown with just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter.Â
Smith finished the game with five receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown and was definitely the player of the week for the Philadelphia Eagles. The kid has amazing footwork and always seems to be open. It’s just a matter of getting him the ball.
Looking at PFF rankings, Smith was atop of the list in almost every category for a wide receiver in Week 9.Â
- #1 PFF receiving grade- 92.3
- #1 PFF offensive grade- 92.6
- Tied #1 receiving yards- 116
- Ties #1 first downs- 5
- #4 yards per reception- 23.2
- 1 of 4 players with a perfect passer rating (158.3) when targeted
Fletcher Cox has already put his money on Smitty and it looks like we actually might have ourselves a bet today when the Eagles practice. Hopefully we’ll see a video. If these fellas had any idea how to create content like me, there will be a livestream with Smitty blanketing Slay this afternoon.
I would bet all of my money on DeVonta Smith cooking Slay on their side of the football. Yes, Slay is always ranked by PFF as one of the top cornerbacks in the league week after week but I just don’t see him stopping DeVonta Smith in any type of situation.
[…] this week, I wrote about how DeVonta Smith would lock up Darius Slay if given the chance to cover him on defense. I also suggested that they film it and release a video […]
