Phillies hitting coach Kevin Long had the perfect reaction on MLB Network when hearing Kyle Schwarber’s name

Kevin Long hopped on “Hot Stove” on MLB Network this morning to talk free agency, award winners, and more. Long was hired by the Phillies this offseason as the new hitting coach of the team, previously working with the Nationals, Mets, and Yankees. Kyle Schwarber, a big-name outfield free agent, was brought up in conversation, and Kevin Long had an interesting reaction to hearing the left fielder’s name. Check out the video below.
This video got me all amped up. Obviously, it’s a seven-second clip, so we don’t really know what Long’s intentions were with his reaction. But I’ll tell you this. Kyle Schwarber tore up the league with the Nationals before he got traded to the Red Sox later in the year. Schwarber was coming off of a rough 2020 season with the Cubs, and Kevin Long completely got his swing back to where it needed to be. There’s history between these two, and it seems like Kevin Long has a good relationship with Schwarber.
Jon Heyman predicted Kyle Schwarber to the Phillies a few weeks ago on his podcast “Big Time Baseball”, and had a lot of good things to say about the possible reuniting of Schwarber and Long.
“I’m gonna concentrate on the fact that he was with the Nats more than the Cubs, and say that Kevin Long helped him improve his swing and he really took off as a member of the Nats, and he continued that as a member of the Red Sox. Now that Kevin Long is the hitting coach of the Phillies….that Schwarber winds up with the Phillies. And again, we’re looking at the possibility of the universal DH, so there could be room for Hoskins and Schwarber in Philly.” Heyman on Big Time Baseball.
Schwarber tore it up with the Nationals last year, hitting .253/.340/.570 in 72 games before being traded to the Red Sox. He crushed 25 home runs and 9 doubles with the Nats, good for an OPS of .910, and an OPS+ of 145 with Washington. He finished the season as a whole with 32 HRs, 19 doubles, 106 hits, and 71 RBIs.
It’s no secret that the Phillies need a left fielder that can hit. To pair Schwarber up with Bryce Harper in the corner outfield positions would be fantastic. Another report came out this morning from Jon Heyman about the continuous Phillies interest in outfielder Starling Marte, something that we’ve heard before.
Zack Wheeler got straight up robbed of NL Cy Young last night by Corbin Burnes, and Bryce Harper is the favorite to win the NL MVP tonight, which will be the second of his career. Keep an eye out on the Liberty Line Twitter tonight for a giveaway in regards to Bryce Harper. The bottom line, get Kyle Schwarber in a Phillies uniform if the price is right.
