Kendrick Perkins debuted a new nickname for Joel Embiid last night

ESPN analyst and former NBA journeyman Kendrick Perkins has been impressed with Joel Embiid’s play this year, especially in last night’s win over the Toronto Raptors. So much so, in fact, that he took to Twitter to remind the peasantry just how good the Sixers big man is.
In his tweet praising Embiid, Perkins – affectionately and accurately known as “Big Perk” – gave him a size-related nickname as well:
Joel “Big Philly” Embiid
Of course, Sixers fans on Twitter quickly pointed out that “Big Philly” is simply not Embiid’s nickname. Nobody went after Perkins too hard, though. It’s admittedly difficult to hate on somebody when they’re gassing up your favorite player.
If you doubt the validity of my claim that “Big Philly” is not an official moniker, go ahead and check out Joel Embiid’s Basketball Reference page.

Is Perkins onto something?
I know we gave Perkins a little crap for just making up a nickname on the spot, but… I kinda love it? Sure, calling a guy “Big Philly” if you’re from Philly is a little redundant.
I don’t care, though. Embiid truly is a larger-than-life representation of the things Philly loves about Philly.
Embiid spends summers down the shore, hustles his ass off, and loves the hate more than the praise. It’s honestly a perfect nickname, if only a bit too on the nose.
Hopefully, Embiid becomes a player with seemingly endless nicknames, much like Shaquille O’Neal himself. But, for now, we have:
- JoJo
- The Process
- Do-a-180 (lmao)
- Troel
And maybe soon, “Big Philly?” Only time will tell.
