Doug Pederson expected to interview for Bears’ head coaching position

According to Tom Pelissero, former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is expected to interview for the Chicago Bears’ head coach opening this offseason.

Pederson is a top coaching candidate around the league, interviewing with the Jacksonville Jaguars this past Thursday.

The Bears dismissed former head coach Matt Nagy alongside general manager Ryan Pace yesterday morning. Pederson was among the Bears’ first list of candidates, including Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll among others.

This past summer, Pederson stopped by Bears training camp, with Nagy and Pederson having worked in Kansas City together. Nagy was the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach when Pederson was the offensive coordinator under Andy Reid.

The most critical priority in Chicago right now is the development of Justin Fields, so Pederson is a perfect fit with his quarterback background. It would also reunite the former Eagles head coach with Nick Foles, who’s the Bears’ third-string quarterback.

The Eagles could also be losing one of their assistants to the coaching carousel. Yesterday, the Denver Broncos requested permission to interview defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon for their head coach opening.

There are some other teams who could put Pederson on their shortlist in the coming days, including the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins. With the Bears wanting an offensive-minded coach, Pederson could be their top choice. Regardless, it’s looking very likely the Super Bowl champion will once again be a head coach very soon.

Another keynote is if the Bears do hire him, Doug Pederson will face off against the Eagles at some point next season in Chicago. The Jaguars face Philadelphia as well in 2022, so a very good chance Dougie P will square off against his former franchise.
