Former Eagles quarterback interviews for head coach opening

The Houston Texans conducted their second interview yesterday with former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Josh McCown for their head coach vacancy.
McCown has no prior coaching experience outside of the high-school level but has been floated as a coaching candidate in a coordinator or head coach role since he retired last season.
The Eagles signed McCown in 2019 and he filled in for Carson Wentz during their 2020 Wild Card matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. McCown played well despite the loss and remained with the Eagles as an emergency quarterback on their practice squad through the start of the next season.
After their Wild Card loss, Philadelphia wanted to bring back McCown as an assistant coach, but he turned down the job to continue playing. The 42-year-old was in the NFL since 2002, playing for ten different teams.
Houston showed interest in McCown last season, speaking with him before eventually hiring Dave Culley. A second interview isn’t guaranteed, so it shows the Texans are seriously interested in bringing him on. The Texans also interviewed Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon alongside several other candidates.
Hiring a head coach with zero NFL coaching experience is often stupid, but McCown might be able to make the jump. Most teams signed McCown for his presence in the QB room and knowledge from his lengthy NFL career.
Over the next few weeks, most of these positions will be filled, and there’s a good chance that several former Eagles could find themselves as head coaches. Former Eagles HC Doug Pederson and current defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon have been linked to several teams, including the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
Update:
According to a recent report from ESPN, although McCown interviewed twice, Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon is believed to be considered by some within the Texans’ organization as the front-runner for their head coach position.
Gannon has strong ties to Houston’s current general manager Nick Caserio and interviewed with the team earlier this week. McCown has a good shot with two interviews, but his lack of coaching experience could hurt him in comparison to the Eagles’ DC.
