They Hate The Process: Joel Embiid snubbed for NBA Player of the Week Honors

The NBA released their players of the week for last week in both the Eastern and Western Conference. Of course, Nikola Jokic took home the honors in the West and Joel Embiid took home the honors in the East, right? Nope. While Jokic won the West, Trae Young nabbed the award for the Eastern Conference in a ridiculous snub to Joel Embiid, proving that the NBA truly does hate The Process.
Known Klutch Sports pawn, Shams Charania probably LOVED announcing someone else besides Joel Embiid. I bet he took the Player of the Week report straight to the desk of Rich Paul like a good little boy and expressed how excited he was to help build the case against Embiid while supporting Ben Simmons.
Anyways, here’s a look at the POW details for Nikola Jokic, courtesy of NBA.com
Jokić wins the award for the first time this season and has now earned Western Conference Player of the Week honors 10 times in his career, tying Carmelo Anthony for the most in franchise history.
Jokić, 26, averaged 36.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 10.0 assists and 2.30 steals, shooting .650 from the field and .400 from three-point range while helping lead the Nuggets to a 2-1 week. The Nuggets have now won six of their last nine games, improving to sixth in the Western Conference at 24-21.
All that makes perfect sense. Jokic dominated anyone in his way last week and no, I’m not interested in the statsexuals coming in here throwing a bunch of stats at me that I have no clue what they even mean. Save it for another time, nerds.
Anyways, here’s what NBA.com had to say about Trae Young winning the award
Young led the Hawks to a perfect 4-0 record this past week, averaging 31.3 points (3rd-most in the Eastern Conference), 4.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists (tied 3rd-most in the Eastern Conference) and 1.0 steal in 36.6 minutes of action (.464 FG%, .476 3FG%, .911 FT%).
Cool. Great week for Trae Young. No one is questioning that. I am however, wondering why Joel Embiid didn’t win the award?
Joel Embiid averaged 40.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists in four games last week. I don’t need to be a stat nerd to see that’s clearly better than Trae Young’s numbers.
Sure, the 76ers went 2-2 last week, which is probably the reason why Young got the honors rather than Embiid. The Wizards game stunk, the Sixers beat the Magic, collapsed against the Clippers, then beat the Spurs last night.
However, the record had nothing to do with what Joel Embiid was able to accomplish during the week.
During four games last week, Joel Embiid scored more points than minutes played.
- 38 points in 31 minutes
- 40 points in 37 minutes
- 50 points in 27 minutes
- 32 points in 29 minutes
Joel Embiid is not only last week’s Player of the Week, but he’s the leading candidate to win the NBA MVP this season. The only reason to not give him the award is because the NBA can’t give him every single award available.
Embiid himself said he doesn’t care about the awards, so while it sucks, screw em. The big fella just wants a championship and in the end, that’s the only thing that matters.
