US Capitol evacuated after Nationals host Military Appreciation Night and failed to notify officials
The United States Capitol complex was evacuated Wednesday afternoon, after troops who parachuted into Nationals Park for Military Appreciation Day were mistaken for an invasion.
The Capitol Police ordered the evacuation, saying they were “tracking an aircraft that poses a probable threat.”
The pregame performance, which you think would have been scheduled months in advance, included a plane full of US Army Golden Knights circling the area that includes the US Capitol, before landing in the Nationals outfield.
Ok, there’s certainly a lot to unpack here..
My first thought is I feel terrible for the Nationals intern who forgot to send an email and is now probably going to fail his internship. That’s a tough one, but are interns really to blame here? I don’t think so.
How inept are the franchises in Washington DC?
Back in January, the Washington Commanders (terrible name), tried to kill Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts when an old rusty railing at FedEx Field collapsed sending fans tumbling toward Hurts. This is in addition to claims of sexual misconduct from former employees and Congress investigating the team for tax fraud.
And the Nationals?! Well, despite getting hot in 2019 and stumbling into a World Series victory, they are the same franchise who thought it was a sound business decision to let Bryce Harper walk to a division rivals for nothing in return.
Later on we learned that according to the Associated Press, it was actually the Federal Aviation Administration, not the Nat’s fault that panic ensued. Apparently, the FAA official failed to forward the email from the Nationals intern to the Capitol Police that detailed how they would circling the Capitol in a large airplane.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, blasted the whole situation as an “inexcusable” failure. Here’s what Nacy Pelosi had to say about the incident.
“The unnecessary panic caused by this apparent negligence was particularly harmful” for those still facing trauma from the 6 January attack on the Capitol, she said, adding that Congress would review “what precisely went wrong today and who at the Federal Aviation Administration will be held accountable for this outrageous and frightening mistake.”
Jesus Christ, Nancy. What did you think was happening? A bunch of QAnon shamans flying out of the sky for an arial attack on the Capital? Or was it the Russians? Possibly the Middle East? Not really sure where the fear was coming from. Sure, I get that you rather be safe than sorry, but come on.
Just imagine if that happened in Philly on Opening Day with the Phillie Phanatic floating down from the skies. Nancy Pelosi probably thought it was an alien invasion. Speaking of aliens, it appears NASA is now going above and beyond to contact them. Is it possible Pelosi was nervous that the attempt at communicating with the aliens actually worked?
I doubt we’ll ever get real answers. We rarely ever do. Sure, run out the whole insurrection / January 6th “attack” narrative out there and keep it moving. I don’t care, that’ll work. This is just another prime example of our highly efficient government fear mongering their way to another disaster. We can’t have our elected officials absolutely terrified about everything.
