Debate: Who is the best general manager in Philly sports?

Philadelphia sports has entered another dead zone. The 76ers had yet another second round exit in the 2022 NBA Playoffs, The Eagles and the NFL Draft wrapped up over a month ago, and the Philadelphia Phillies are still playing .500 baseball.
Then of course, you have the poverty franchise that is the Philadelphia Flyers and a soccer team out in Chester called the Philadelphia Union. With all teams considered, it feels like a great time to bring up this question; who is the best general manager in Philly sports?
If we had asked this question back on February 10th, we would probably have a different answer. Daryl Morey worked himself out of an impossible situation and finally traded Ben Simmons in return for James Harden, which appeared to be a home run move. As we all know, a lot has happened since the NBA Trade Deadline.
Official Philly Sports GM Rankings
- Howie Roseman
- Daryl Morey
- Ernest Tanner
- Dave Dombrowski
- Chuck Fletcher
Howie Roseman
Howie Roseman is currently the only general manager in Philadelphia to deliver a championship. Although Roseman has put Eagles’ fans through some frustrating NFL Drafts, the last two years have been home runs, adding players like A.J. Brown, James Bradberry, DeVonta Smith, Landon Dickerson, Jordan Davis, and Nakobe Dean.
Daryl Morey
Honestly, I could have easily slotted Dave Dombrowski or Ernest Tanner in second place over Morey, but given the fact that the 76ers GM was dealt an impossible task dealing with Ben Simmons, there’s enough reason to say that he’s locked in as second place in the Philly GM Rankings.
Still, Morey has the Sixers where they were before he arrived to Philly as a second round team but the moves he made to get the 76ers to the number one seed last season by dumping Al Horford and Josh Richardson were incredible. This is a team that should have been a conference finals team if it wasn’t for poor coaching (Shout out Doc Rivers), and Ben Simmons (baby).
Last season was so unprecedented for the 76ers and Morey went out and did what he could to correct it by getting James Harden. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but at the time, the move made the most sense and instantly turned the 76ers into finals contenders once again heading into the playoffs.
Ernest Tanner
The Philadelphia Union won the Supporters Shield in 2020 and made the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League. Last season, they were well on their way to the MLS Cup Finals before COVID-19 tore through the roster, keeping 11 players out of the lineup. This season, the Union are in first place in the MLS Eastern Conference Standings and continue to be a soccer powerhouse.
Dave Dombrowski
Dombrowski has added some much needed firepower to the Phillies lineup with the additions of both Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber. Still, we haven’t seen enough from the Philadelphia Phillies this season, as they sit right around the .500 mark at 17-18.
Chuck Fletcher
No. Do I even need to touch on Chuck Fletcher? I stopped watching the Flyers years ago. They are a poverty franchise run by Comcast. Once they start caring about the organization, maybe I will. Unfortunately, that will not be today.

I’m generally curious where everyone else ranks the GM’s here in Philly. I’m also hoping my recent Daryl Morey hate is a form of reverse psychology that will shift the fate of the Sixers this offseason.
We can only hope.
