Chris Simms ranks Jalen Hurts as bottom-tier starter for second consecutive year

This time last year, former QB and current NFL analyst Chris Simms released his top-40 QB rankings, famously leaving Jalen Hurts off the list.
Under rookie head coach Nick Sirianni, Hurts racked up 26 total touchdowns and led the Eagles to a playoff berth after a rocky start.
The young QB showed promise in his first full year as a starter, and Simms later acknowledged that leaving Hurts off his list was erroneous.
Despite his misjudgment, Simms still doesn’t appear to be sold on Hurts in 2022.
In this year’s installment of his top-40 rankings, Simms has Hurts sitting at #25 behind a trio of second-year players and turnover-machine Daniel Jones.

“Physical ability, hey, we know — guy can run,” Simms said on NBC Sports. “It’s real. He can extend plays, do things there, certainly. But physical ability is also throwing the ball. [Jalen Hurts] throwing the ball is below-average NFL starting quarterback quality, and that’s the big thing here.”
Placing these four quarterbacks, who are all coming off lackluster seasons, ahead of Hurts is peculiar — even if there are reservations about his skillset as a passer.
With superstar receiver AJ Brown now in Philadelphia, many expect Hurts to take a big leap in his development next season. Perhaps then, Chris Simms will show him the appropriate respect.
Hurts finished his 2021 campaign throwing for 3,144 yards on 61% comp., 16 TDs and 9 INTs while rushing for 784 yards and adding 10 scores on the ground.
