Preview: Phillies Look to Make It 3 Straight Wins With Zack Wheeler on the Mound Against the Angels

The Phillies will look to extend their winning streak to three straight games as Zack Wheeler takes the mound Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Phillies take on the Los Angeles Angels tonight with the first pitch scheduled for 7:15 pm EST. Earlier this morning MLB announced that Zack Wheeler was named National League Pitcher of the Month in May. After struggling out of the gate in April posting a 1-3 record and 5.79 ERA, Wheeler has regained the form that had him 2nd in NL Cy Young Award voting last season.

In five starts during the month Wheeler was 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA over 32.2 innings of work. Wheeler struck out 40 hitters over that period while walking over 5, good for a stellar 8:1 K/BB ratio. All of Wheeler’s stats for the month were incredible but i appreciate that he allowed only one home run the entire month. Just think where this Phillies team would be without his pitching.

As for the Angels, they will look to end a 9-game losing streak that continued after being drubbed the Phils 10-0 in the first game of the series on Friday night.

Prediction

I would normally be hesitant to wager on the Phillies to win on two consecutive nights in a row, but how can I go against them with the reigning NL Pitcher of the Month, Zack Wheeler taking the mound. I think the firing of Joe Girardi has lit what will be prove to be a temporary spark for the Phillies offense.
